what do you think about villans turn call at 11:00 minutes with 77

Aug. 18, 2017 | 12:23 a.m.

great video steve,
what are your thoughts about the q9s fold in the bottom right corner at 6minutes

Nov. 8, 2016 | 4:28 a.m.

Hey Jeremy,

the hand a little before 13:00 against Marroca5, you argue that he wont be able to find a call with his range. If you are bluffing Kqs,QJs,87s and valuing TT-99,ATs,JTs,T9s is he not getting great odds to call?

Nov. 4, 2016 | 3:48 a.m.

Thanks Akria,

@6:25 you speak of donking flop, what other hands would your range consist of when donking in this spot?

Sept. 21, 2016 | 2:40 a.m.

at 5:30 are you ever leading flop? or are you placing this type of hand in your bluff catching range? If you are leading what sizing are you going with?

Sept. 20, 2016 | 12:27 a.m.

Thanks for the response Akria,

Since the standard 2.2 open gives BB such great pot odds have you sized up on your opens?
I recently made the transition to a 3x open in early stages of tournaments. A 2.5,2.7 and 2.8 from lp,mp, and ep respectively in mid stages and a 2.5 during end stages. What do you think of this adjustment? do you think min opens and 2.2 opens are still more profitable? If so I would like to hear your arguments why.

Sept. 5, 2016 | 3:52 p.m.

Thanks for the detailed reply Chris, I appreciate it. Im going to try and become more aware of ChipEV in these spots and weigh it against the dollar equity gained. On another note does this mean you'll be playing the 100k?! Looking forward to railing it.

Aug. 27, 2016 | 3:11 p.m.

Thanks for the video Chris!
42:25 you open 55 UTG, if only fieldmice1 had jammed would you have called? The bounty makes it a +EV call but you argue at 44:55 Arty120 shows up too light when he calls your 22 off with 98o at 38:00. I believe 98o against your jamming range is winning (with bounty) so i'm a bit confused about your reasoning on passing it up.
48:49 you open Q10 mp with a loose table image and a ten blind stack behind. Do you believe holding such blockers makes an open profitable? If so, would your strategy for this specific play change if the tournament was not a bounty builder and calling off the 10bb stack was not as attractive

Aug. 27, 2016 | 3:36 a.m.

Hey Akira great video,

At 17:00 minutes you construct a bluffing range against the BB 3bet. In this type of situation I almost always jam my KQo as it blocks his calling range of KK,QQ,AK,AQ. Do you believe this type of hand would actually do better as a call?
Also, I feel that the population lacks a bluffing range from the BB as it is very appealing to defend wide. If you were to construct a bluffing range for the BB in this situation what types of hands would you use?

Hey Chris, great video. Like you said, its nice to actually enjoy a live play session once in awhile rather than studying pure theory.

I've got one question on the hand where you hold K10s against Greenwood and he 3bets a6s from the SB @ 44:14 minutes

you state that this play is pretty bad but i'm wondering why? if he is doing the same thing with his premiums isn't a6s a good candidate for balance?

Aug. 16, 2016 | 11:34 p.m.

does the last hand account for future game simulation? if not, do you think the implications would change an ats call

Comment | alja6230 commented on River Calls

great video sam.

One question I have about river calls is the ICM implications. If one does believe villains range does hold enough bluffs to make a call indifferent or slightly profitable how do you address the issue of ICM presence throughout the tournament? Obviously the implications are straight forward on the bubble or final table but what about the mild ICM implications throughout the tournament. Should a small gap be left between a GTO call and a profitable call? If so how large?

April 30, 2016 | 9:15 p.m.

hey great video!

at 29:00 minutes when building a range for the villian with 15bb against your open with KK you feel he is heavily waited towards AA. I agree with this, but if we changed the situation to a full 9 man table and you were UTG how do you think the villain should play his aj,a10 combos and 99 type hands from this very position.

I hold the 10h block which rules out his j10h 109h that are played this way. I feel he has a trapping range kk+, a set mining range of 88-, and maybe some axh combos?

Villain seems to realize that doubling up small stack relives a lot of pressure on medium stacks and continues to fold to jams by small stack in order to keep the table dynamic.

Therefore, is this a reasonable play to make as hero realizes he does have fold equity and also that villain is opening up at least 40% of hands from CO meaning q7s is ahead of part of his range

Feb. 15, 2016 | 11:01 p.m.

In 2 orbits at FT I witnessed massive stack r/f to small stack 10bb jams. The big stack, who is villian folded twice when two different players were the smallest stacks and jammed over his raise. Large stack continued to raise aggressively dominating table and then this hand occurred.

hey john

another great video. As you discussed it would be horrendous if you doubled up the small stack on an ft when you possess the big stack as it removes much of the pressure that the mid stacks face. Therefore, would it be a good play to jam wider being a small stack against big stack opens(if the big stack is being aggro and is a good thinking player) as his calling range will have to consist of premiums. Or is this doing too much?

Hi Paul,

Great Video when playing re-buy and add on tournaments compared to a freeze out what are necessary adjustments?

Jan. 15, 2016 | 8:26 p.m.

Dear John,

Thank you so much for the quick response. I really appreciate you going out of your way to walk through your thoughts on a hand. I realize I shouldn't be posting them in this thread and will move further questions to MTT strat.

Regarding the video, at 42:31 we see villian raise in positon on a 25K rainbow board. His range is obviously polarized when he makes this play. What would have been your line if he had bet half pot or 1/3 pot on the turn.

I always feel being raised while out of position on flops heads up is one of the hardest spots in poker. do you feel on dry boards weaker players usually show up with air in these spots? Also, do you think your flat call caps your range and therefore will induce pressure on later streets?

Once again thanks for the detailed response, open jamming that certain range in that situation is something I had never even considered.

Jan. 12, 2016 | 9:27 p.m.

hey John,

Great video, I've been trying to work on my final table game as I seem to make it to them with a chip lead and spew it away by getting into battles with other big stacks.

your video really opened my eyes to final table dynamics and reminds me of a hand i was involved in a couple weeks ago.

on an ft i was being constantly 3 bet by an aggro player in position. We both had mid stacks with about 25bbs. I therefore adjusted and tightened my range. I then picked up a10s and min opened and i was once again met by his 3 bet. With 2 short stacks with around 8-10bbs on the table what do you think i should of done? folded? called? 4 bet? jammed?

Post | alja6230 posted in MTT: calling off 11-20bb jams

With no reads on villian how wide can we be opening co/but and calling off a rejam from sb/bb ?
Is a6 good enough to make a call, or are reads needed in order to see what this player is capable of doing with this size stack?
How much does our calling range differ from a 12bb jam to a 21bb jam?
What about our own stack size how does this effect our decision?

Dec. 23, 2015 | 6:06 a.m.

I think this is a fold. No reg villian is jamming 100bb with 1010. At best we are flipping. QQ+ is going to be played fast and hard here. May be an exploitable fold, but villian spew/bluff here is definitely not profitable for him either.

Post | alja6230 posted in MTT: 20bb leak?

When picking up hands like aj+ with 20bb I seem to be getting in the same spot where I open, villian flats in bb and flop comes 776 789 569 type boards. I continue on these flops and villian flats. once again I lead on the turn and get called. This leaves me in a very awkward spot on river where I'm left with a 3 quarter pot sized bet. what lines do you guys take in these spots? How should my line differ if I make a pair on turn or river?

@onetime1time that makes sense. Do you believe the same line against a reg should be taken then?
Also what type of hands is a reg flatting vs. a 21bb open with small stacks behind left to act?

Comment | alja6230 commented on $109 hurricane 888

@onetime1time I also believe if it is a good reg flatting pre...he is probably inducing small stacks behind to jam over his qq+. Therefore if I think I can check fold flop?

If it's a reg flatting here...what kind of line should be taken? What would he be showing up with?
the villain was a recreational player so I put his range on all broad ways with and without diamonds, sets and under pockets... In this case does line make sense?
