Deepstack MTT play is extremely important it helps you build a stack for later thats why i love the early stages huge postflop edges against weaker players.
Nice work, Todd. Really hammers home why it's so bad to autopilot and nit up during the early orbits in MTT's.
Also, I like how you took a minute to talk about really defining someone's pre-flop range because we can end up having post-flop bias and then struggle to piece it all together correctly.
first hand: q10off isn't that a good 5bet bluff spot because his 4bet backraise range is pretty polar to slow-played monster or mid strenght hand not believing your squeeze?
edit: now that i see he has 88, my tought process seems even more acurate, maybe im wrong hope you tell me what you thinks or other mtt regs thinks about my tought process
Defending QTo to a 4bet here is a pretty borderline play, and although I completely stand by it, it certainly would be reasonable to not want to get involved in this spot. I think that all the reasons you stated for making this a good 5-bet are still arguments for why it is a good flat too. Essentially I don't really believe his raise and therefore think I have a decent amount of equity against his range. Considering he made his 4-bet very small I think I have enough equity against his range to call this 4-bet. If I had slightly less equity, and I thought that I could not profitably call it, then I would consider 5-betting it. For instance, if I had A5o here it would be a much better spot to 5-bet, but with QTo I prefer to flat. This all depends heavily on your opponent and what you think their range is, but I think against what I thought was a relatively weak range my hand is strong enough to flat and not have to turn into a PF bluff.
We also have to consider his poor post-flop play as a reason to flat and play a pot in position against someone who may make big mistakes out of position in a big pot and it's possible I was anticipating something like this when I flatted PF.
