Tariq Haji

POSTED Oct 29, 2020

Four tables of $100 NL are loaded up for Tariq Haji as he grinds a typical session against a seemingly great player pool before reviewing tough hands and getting into the theory of raising rivers on the anonymous pools at Ignition.

On your hand when you have TT vs. JJ would you have bet large on some other rivers considering your specific read, essentially turning your hand into a bluff?

Tariq Haji 4 years, 5 months ago

Hey Khalil; interesting question.

Hmmm I think I'd just check back and hope to somehow win. It's kind of a weird spot where I think he has alot of JJ but I'm not sure here I think turning TT into a bluff just a little too ambitious and just happily check back

@4.11 you talk about 2x potting this river to get him to fold the middling strength hands like 55/66 ax combos (which i would also agree a lot of these hands are probably checking to check call the river). The question was do you think we are super imbalanced to bluffs in this spot since we never really play much of our value hands this way? (checking back flop, flat turn then 2x pot rivers)

Tariq Haji 4 years, 5 months ago

Whilst I may be a little imbalanced here towards bluffs, I don't think it matters too much because I think we just get the job done almost every time and don't need to worry about being exploited/imbalanced

Hey! Very nice video format!
7:59 AKo: Why so small squeeze? You also said that normally you would go even smaller. Don't you think that we induce many calls by doing that? I don't think a hand like AKo really wants that.

19:26 KJo: Why fold here? I mean his 3bet isn't big and also 3bet range SB vs BB is supposed to be wider therefore making us defend more hands. Am I missing something?

Tariq Haji 4 years, 5 months ago

Hey Pockets; thanks for the kind words.

the AKo hand; a rule of thumb I'll use for 3 betting IP is like 3.5x the open size + however many callers * that open size.

No need to go too much bigger as people will struggle to call OOP and I'm more than happy if someone comes along with a dominated hand like AJ, AT. KQ, KJ.

For the KJo hand, I just don't enjoy defending to 3 bets much OOP so I rather turn the top of my folding range into a 4bet bluff sometimes with my removal properties.

Hope you find this info useful!

Video suggestion would be cbetting MW pots. Seems to be a ton of MW pots on ignition and learning what hands to call with or how strong of a hand we need to have in order to bet with would be super beneficial.

Also video(s) suggestion would be great if you can make like a 10 part course or even longer just discussing overall strategy, ranges, bet sizes, etc on beating micro / low stakes. I know Peter has 'From The Ground Up' course, but feel a course based on some of these American sites, given you can see whole cards would be beneficial from all the population data. More of an exploitative course. We usually watch a lot of videos where we have to bluff catch any top pair type hand, but these low stake players are not bluffing enough, so we end up spewing money by calling down what is supposed to be theoretically correct.

Tariq Haji 4 years, 5 months ago

Hey RunItTw1ce,

I'll keep that in mind regarding MW pots.

Also, your idea of creating a course on how to exploit the low stakes games seems intriguing. I wonder if people would be interested in something like that?

RunItTw1ce 4 years, 5 months ago

29:30 mark you use a 2/3 sizing. After watching Francesco video yesterday I think a block bet size is best on this river given Villain raise pre, cbet flop, then XC turn. Mostly just trying to get ace high to fold as you said and I don't think JX wants to bet very big either.

Tariq Haji 4 years, 5 months ago

I think you are correct. My size on river seems a bit inefficient and I'm probably risking too much since I'm purely targeting A high and maybe some small pairs here.

So yea I agree a block size works better!

37 min mark with the TT hand on Q735T board. You use quarter pot on the river after flop checked through and you use quarter pot on turn as well. I understand the logic of them having weaker holdings and trying to get value, but I was thinking your range being quarter pot seems weak on the turn, so using a large river bet may look like a bluff.

40 min mark A3c on AKQr-4ss-8x board you mention some T9s 52 hands that can bluff. What do you think about turning a hand like Ks7s or QsTs into a bluff? Where villain may raise turn with pair + FD then on the turn when you call, figure you have Ax or Kx but mostly capped range given you flop check. I think it adds quite a few bluff combos to villains range if you turn 2nd or 3rd pair into a bluff. Also would you recommend this play?

52 min mark on the 669JT board I noticed it was a min raise on the river. Are you seeing a lot of min raise bluffs on this BXB line?

Great video. Can you please make some content on how to play multiway spots as this happens frequently on low stakes and there is not much content out there.

Mudkip 4 years, 5 months ago

Again a great video, this "series" of yours really is the best.
Would have loved to see if the bluffs are overly successful. (would probably even support your answer to a previous comment about being unbalanced towards bluffs)

Tariq Haji 4 years, 5 months ago

Hey Mudkip ,

thanks for the kind words!

Regarding bluffs being overly successful.... maybe I can do an investigation into that and discuss my findings in an upcoming video!

lambstockmix 4 years, 5 months ago

Very enjoyable video Tariq.

I love that you assessed pool patterns at the end of the video.

Please please PLEASE do more of this. It's invaluable. You've struck upon a goldmine in terms of content with that.

We shouldn't have calling range on the CO... And I agree because we have regulars on the blinds...
But if we had aggro recs on the blinds like Saturday night or Sunday, can we cold call? I sow at lower stake is more profitable do that and hard to play big pots against aggro drunk peoples :-)

. tariq's videos=pure gold

was pretty surprised by the AK bluff at 52:40. Not a fan of it particularly with that combo.

Just watched this video for the 2nd or 3rd time and it is still my favorite video of yours. Any chance you could do another database analysis of a line... that would be much appreciated as this one video alone adds a tremendous value...especially being that rivers are, without question, the most important street for cash game players. However, just an idea... break down flop raises in 3bet pots. That would be cool. Thanks as always, you have really helped me print casino cash.

Tariq Haji 3 years, 11 months ago

Glad I've helped you a lot!

I was actually thinking about making another database video soon.... maybe I'll copy your idea. Cheers
