Nicolau Villa-Lobos

POSTED Apr 20, 2016

Making his Run It Once debut, Nico reviews the Sunday $500 which netted him a big score. He shares a table with fellow RIO pro Grayson Ramage early in the tournament and keeps a sharp eye on him.

Hi Nico congrats for your first vídeo. On that hand that doubled the Q dont you think there are a lot of bluff combos?
Like, 78, flush draws... Imo you could have called with A high.

Thanks! So I think FD will check shove the flop most part of times here, and going thru the same logic, I think he will be doing this almost with the same frequency with 78, because of his shallow stack, that still has fold equity against me. So when he check call the flop expect him to have much more one pair hand that could be a 5, 6 or a Q. This way, I dont expect him to be folding too often my turn bet.
Abracos bro e obrigado pelo comentario!

27:00 1010 facing Grayson with 30bbs opening 23% and callers who are unlikely to have you beat. AK, JJ+ is 3% of hands 1680 free chips :( I don't think that spot is high variance at all I think you are taking it down like 85% of the time. That hand made me a little sad but really liked the video

Nicolau Villa-Lobos 8 years, 11 months ago

I kinda agree with you. At the time I was not that comfortable playing that spot as I told during the video. I think the call is much more because of a strategy that I had at the time. I also think that collecting the 1650 is not the only option here, as I can still play my tens post flop and win a bigger pot. And just to correct a data here, 23% opening is from EP would be utg and utg+1. PT4 shows EP but the stat is the sum from both positions. Eitherway after reviewing several times, I think the best play here is 3bet call grayson , and huge part of the time I will take it down the pot pre flop! Thanks bro, really appreciate your comment.

great addition! really good stuff welcome
and alleluhia; you made a very good point about showing hands you fold, because I think training videos with just VPIP hands don't bring the overall picture of a tournament and I guess you win tournament by folding in specific spots a hand you would have play in other spot. would be great to have a video and examples on these kind of situations not only ICM but in any spot where you are risking a big chunk of your stack or tournament life in the money but far from fnal table.

Definitely will be doing this! It's one of my favourite aspects of the game! The "WHY" behind the folds. ps: sorry if it doesnt make sense, kinda translated a portuguese expression lol

Hey Nicolau,

first off,, great video; thanks.

23:30 : QTo

How often would you lead vs XR w sets here on the flop?

Which line would you prefer with the sets on the turn?

/ What I have in mind is .. I was wondering how much would you be uncapped here coming to the turn, thus if you bomb the turn and bomb the river here, how often do you expect the OR to call with AJ through AK

Thanks

Nicolau Villa-Lobos 8 years, 11 months ago

thanks bro!

1) I think I would XR more than lead here with a set, specially because I think Sifosis will give up almost 100% of the times when he misses. And when he hits or has an overpair, he will definitely bet, and will give me action with both hands after my XR.
2) Definitely will be leading the turn here with a set, because even when he hits the A I dont expect him to be calling to often my turn XR. Another option would be check call turn and lead river, but there will be a lot of cards that will kill the action, so probably my line here will be bet turn and bet a lot of rivers, maybe check calling the spade since I dont believe him to have a FD.
3) I actually can bomb bomb here because I dont think he will be calling with AJ too often. The problem is that I will have to check some rivers that I dont think he will be folding. Generally 2/3 turn and 2/3 river will work really well against a regular player.
Cheers

Very nice video Nicolau! Keep going with this great job please!

Quick question: 27:27 bet the flop for protection is it a good option? Or you didn't bet because you expect to get called from over pairs and draws most of the time?

Thanks!

Nicolau Villa-Lobos 8 years, 11 months ago

Thanks Rinaldi! So, since I'm not the aggressor I won't be leading the action with this hand. Not the type of hand that I will have in my donk bet range against 3 opponents. Could be doing this with a set or a very good draw that I will be up to go against gray34 eventual shove. Maybe in a heads up pot I could bet/call the aggressor, even though I think I would check call it also.

Great video Nico. On this first moment I could confirm that the ABC game works a lot, maybe on the final part we have to be more creative on some spots or against good players but on this first moment of the tournament ABC works great. Gongratulations and Vaaamo!

Nicolau Villa-Lobos 8 years, 11 months ago

Thanks Marcelo! I feel exactly the same way. Early game is much more basic in my opinion, and surviving this part is really important. But it's impossible to win a tournament in the early game, so I guess we should start taking our tools from the box when it matters the most.

Vlw Nico !!! Tirando uns errinhos de inglês , o vídeo está top , me lembrou a review que vc fez no mineirão 500k ano passado, explicando tbm mãos pouco complexas, mas importantes para qualquer sucesso nos grinds. Vamoooo

Glad u join RIO . Can't wait for more videos.

Best regards,

Nice video. Easy to follow. Good pace. Towards the end of the video you flatted with 10.10. Why didn't you lead out on the flop and protect your over pair?

Hi howle, you might have missed Nico's reply to this very question further up in the comments. I hope he doesn't mind, but I'll just cut/paste his response here for you:

Thanks Rinaldi! So, since I'm not the aggressor I won't be leading the action with this hand. Not the type of hand that I will have in my donk bet range against 3 opponents. Could be doing this with a set or a very good draw that I will be up to go against gray34 eventual shove. _Five_Majors_ 8 years, 7 months ago

Nicolau, I'm new to RIO and this is the first video series I've watched where a RIO Pro takes me through one of his deep tournament scores. I enjoyed Part 1! You do a really good job of explaining your thought process as you work your way through a hand.
