I have a question about 3xing, isnt that always better even though your opponent is 2xing, given that you make the pot bigger in position than him, and you are going to tend to win more of the pots where you are in position. And when he 2xes you adjust your ranges accordingly, defending wider and 3betting less, and to smaller amounts?
Or is it necesarry to 2x when he is doing it?
Seems to me like you would have an advantage theory wise with bigger pots in position, vs a guy who is only playing small pots in position. Or maybe some people can pull off the 3xing when they are 2xing, and some people can not?
I'm kind of on the same idea as Juan here. Why is it relevant what the opp. is xing? We have our hand and our position. Aren't those variables more important?
I would be 3xing vs weaker/passive players who are not adjusting their defending range, but this opponent is competent enough where he is going to be playing a tighter range vs 3x opening sizings than he is vs smaller sizings, so I want to force him to play more pots OOP than just taking more pots down preflop. It is not a major thing and no need to think a whole lot about it, but I feel having a small button raise size vs competent opponents and forcing them to either play more hands OOP, or make mistakes by folding or 3bing too much is good vs players who are used to 3x raise sizes and may not adjust immediately. If they are weak/loose-passive then 3xing is going to be my default however, for the reasons you have mentioned
Hey Sam, very nice video, I enjoyed it a lot! I don't have a ton of HU experience myself, but I have some. Looks to me like you played very well. There are some spots where you could go either way will calling or 3-betting, but that's probably more a case of personal preference than anything else. Very interesting how you broke down the K2T8 hand. I think I would have played it with the same general plan there on the turn, but not sure if I could have explained it quite as well as you did. Well done!
There's one spot early on though, where you bluff raise a Q89 board with 543J. I'm not sure I agree with that raise. Don't you think it splits his range the completely wrong way? He'll fold all his weaker hands/draws and continue with all his stronger hands. You say it's a lockdown board, but it's not all that hard for him to have fd+gutter for example which should certainly continue. This board also should connect well with his 3-betting range. I'd like a bluff raise with air a lot more on a 854r board, where it's just very unlikely that he can do anything about it. I guess raising is better than floating with your particular hand, but I'd seriously consider folding in this spot.
Btw, with regard to 3x or not... I'd always default to 3x-ing in HU cash games and then adjust from there. Whether he opens 2x himself or not doesn't really matter, the key thing is how he responds to your various open sizes. If his call-or-3b range changes with your open size (which it should) then you may want to adjust your open size as the match goes on. But 3x is a good default I think. And when stacks get deeper than 100bb I'd probably always 3x it regardless.
I've been 2x-ing it in HU tournaments though, and I like the results. This reduces the risk and leverages my postflop skill edge in position against weaker opponents. In tournaments you also seem to have both preflop and postflop fold equity that you don't quite get in cash games.
Btw I think you mentioned him opening 75%, but I don't know if you have your hud set up to separate his sb and bb play. You def. want this for HU as players often play quite differently in the respective positions. If 75% is his sb open then it seems kinda tight, but if it's his average vpip then it might indicate that he defends somewhat loose in the bb.
Disagree with some of the analysis on the KT28cc, villain can easily have sets and overpairs with hearts or clubs, if hes competent so your plan has a pretty big flaw in that, when you do call on blanks, he should be fairly balanced with value bets and not just missed draws. Theres absolutely no reason why villain cant have KK with hearts or clubs, same with aces.
Nice video regardless, really appreciate that you took such a humble attitude towards villain and the match, I can't really say the same for villain sadly.
Nice video Sam. I find it very hard to fold bb vs 2x opens in PLO. Also with the high rake at 100PLO Im wondering if its even profitable to play a 2x opening opponent. You will be obliged to play more hands and therefore pay more rake. Any thoughts on min opens in general in Omaha? I see this also happening a lot more in 6max games lately..
themightyjim11 years, 8 months agodo you think that jamming the KT82cc hand on the turn is a better plan as villain may have to fold something that has close to 50% equity and it prevents us from making big mistakes on the river? My first thought when I saw his turn x/r was that you would just jam over the top.

I like that you go in depth on your thought process!

Also the advantage of playing small pots OOP, and large pots IP. Thanx
