Excellent video, thx to both of you for doing this, very insightful. Only one minor problem (which is w/ all the videos): once you pause the video, after a short while it says video error, & have to reload the page. I think its been mentioned before, just want to know if there's a fix for it. <

Around the 14 minute mark we have the K flush, and you say he calls down w/ 9flush and 99. W/ the 99 in his hand, not sure what we can be bet turn bet river w/? I guess turning a gutter J into a bluff? Feels like we have an opp. who is calling down too light in these marginal situations, nice for value later? Or I could personally play too polarized on these boards, and start including more air/overpairs into a btbr range here.

Now that i think about it, I think it fits in w/ a math/equity type play. He knows that our straight draws are more heavily weighted towards gutter balls that need a 9 to complete, gives enough equity to his hand that he can continue calling down turn and river as well.

Very good video, I've really wanted to see a PLO HU video and this one def delivers.
Since you asked for suggestions I'd really like to see a hand history review using oracle or a similar program for a more math based approach.

Awesome video! finally you make heads up video. I really enjoyed when you played Hu against donkpredator in last video. Good idea with notes, really interesting how you will use this notes in future. But for me,in the end of video, you talked too much about notes. Can we call this player calling station after hands with AA and 87s?
Phil Galfond 12 years, 2 months ago
@MrBlaze, thank you for the kind words.

I think that calling our opponent a calling station wouldn't be accurate, or at best would be an oversimplification.

I understand why watching me talk about and make more notes at the end of the video would be boring, but unless most people want me to stop, I would prefer not to. Making reads, just like I am doing in this video series, is one of the main things I believe sets me apart from my competition.

I think it's largely responsible for my success, so I want to explain it for the members as best I can, even though it's not an easy thing to teach.

Great video! The only thing that could make this better is also hearing Leo's thoughts on some of the hands although those would probably include some conclusions based on his reads. Maybe you could "compare notes" at the end?

On the hand where Villain has 8744cc and calls down oop on 962cc K Ac: In your analysis at the end of the video you say that with regards to just the bets going in on a club river you are not sure whether he is actually making money since Leo has better flushes as well as bluffs. During the hand you say that Leo is able to bluff the river since you would assume that he is also value betting AK and sets. I like your point about XC weakish hands oop in general but I think in this hand you are a bit pessimistic about Villain's implied odds on flush rivers especially seeing how Leo value bets worse hands in addition to 3barrelling "kinda random" hands like the one he has.

Kerith,

Maybe I was a bit pessimistic. I still think he can't expect to be profiting MUCH on rivers OOP in this spot, if at all, meaning he needs to have immediate equity to make the turn call (since he's likely not going to be able to get away with river bluffs).

Good vid and I like the series. An idea on a video: How to watch Videos! One issue I notice in watching these videos is that it's very hard to know how to interpret the videos themselves. For instance, because we see a certain play being made on a certain board, it seems like this is the "right" way to play the hand, but it may be the Hero is playing the hand this way only 20% of the time and what we are seeing is actually a minority play that may only be used for balance. I think a video that went into what types of situations require heavy balancing and which types do not would be interesting. Last one additional comment on the commentary: In a spot, where you think both X and Y play would be fine, a quick % estimate of each play would be helpful. As in, I fold here probably 1/3 of the time, but I like a check/raise the rest. This happens occasionally in the vids, but there are spots where it's ambiguous what the proper %s should be.

My approach has always been to teach people how I think about the game, and what factors I consider when making my decisions, rather than just showing examples of what I did.

I'll do my best to take your feedback into account, and keep expanding as much as I think makes sense. Thanks.

Very nice vid just like always, tyvm. I would only like to add, than till now he plays just like the most low stakes fishes, which have a merged raising range (95% of the time a made hand) not backed up by any bluffs and who only raise biggest nuttiest draws. The hand where he has the second nut straight + weak flushdraw and raises turn, you see every day at low stakes at least it is very common. So it would be nice to adjust some of your comments in the next vids or just add some comments about how to adjust when these guys range should be the way I did described it. ty

Don't know how to reply to a reply so putting it here. Quick clarification: I love Phil's approach in explaining his decision in the vids and am only looking for an occasional quantification of the value of X versus Y plays. Sometimes, with Phil's creativity he can justify 2 plays (which is very helpful to understand the reasoning) but I leave not knowing which play is more "optimal". Sometimes they are close and choosing doesn't matter, but I feel sometimes it's a 3 or 4 to 1 ratio to balance but it gets left to ambiguity because both plays were given equal airtime in the video.

can i disagree on villain being a donk? tho villain is playing unusual style i like his play, and of what i ve seen i wouldnt call him a donk
i know its very wrong to open as much, but if the player is very confident in his postflop decisions, isnt it a very good approach in confusing the opponent who cant assign you actually any ranges at all because you are simply playing 100 percent and you may make profit of very very trashy hands hitting things as low 2 pairs, 7 high flush and alike and player playing against him actually cant do anything about it because he cant put more pressure on him since his range is total mystery at any given time
Suggested play approach in video by phil was making larger pot bets preflop may result in simply same thing with bigger pots if player adjusts well - though may happen he cant play bigger pots as good and well postflop, but can happen that he preserves play style that is unusal but cant say DONKish at all
Is it ok i like it? :S
To add to my like is his versatility postflop, and his preflop 100 percent VPIP = how far away are equities in any given 4 cards in PLO preflop so he must obey the rule he cant do it?

Good Video!
On the 962ccKAc I am not sure if I really like bluffing the river. I feel like he has rarely two pair given that some 96 combos are raising flop and a lot of 2 pair Kings are raising turn on that very drawheavy board, There are very few one pair kings in villains range so I feel like you are mostly bluffing one pair hands with straightdraws like 987, 876, K543, etc. On the other hand I see him playing some flushdraws like QJcc or random pairs with flushdraws (propaply not that many Kxxxcc altough certainly some) and some 78cc like that. I was very suprised that you didnt like villains c/c turn with that hand. Villain is propably loosing a little bit of money on the 7 non boardpairing flushcards, obv more money on the 2 that pair the board, is propably winning a little bit on the 2 fours, because heroe is pretty much always valuebetting K9 and some K6 there and can bluff on those as well, and he is ofcourse winning on his 6 nutouts. On boardpairing cards villain might also give up some bluffs, giving villain a tiny little bit of showdownvalue with the 44. So villain has 17 outs that improve him what are almost 39% of rivers, on 7 of those he loses a small amount of money, on 2 of those a bigger amount, on the 2 fours he propably wins a little bit and on the 6 nutouts he should make a lot more than he loses with the flushouts, letting me feel he has almost certainly positive implied odds.
One more thing that came to my mind is that I would like to bluff small flushcards more than the Ac and doing that by just betting the pot to make my range look a litte bit more polarised to A- or K-high flushes, that villain obviously has a lot of in his range and air. That way I feel like villain might fold some flushes altough he might call some rivered straights or other herocalls too, so I am not certain if that play is certainly better than checking or bluffing smaller.

Great video, great series. Not much to add, except that I particularly enjoy the way you take notes, make assumptions etc, this part at the end is extremely valuable. Fantastic job as usual
