River check back - What was going on in my head? I lam happy to tell ya even though you said it all.
- I thought the BB is calling very wide because of pot odds. So in my mind 52 was totally possible. I was afraid of a big check-raise because he knows i cant have 52 ever. I thought that i might just hero-fold to a big check raise fearing he had a hand like 2345, 2245, 2335, 2455. Seeing it now, the check-back does seem silly. I dont want to defend my play at all but if the inintial rasier or the button had been in the hand instead of the bb, i would have probably gone for value on the river. Anyway, you explained that check-back spot very well and it makes totally sense.
PS: I hope that its not too late to ask you. I ve sent 4 parts. You reviewed part 1. Is it possible that you take part 4 as your second review? I made about 70 dollars in profit in part 1-3 and in part 4 i magically turn this session into a slight loser, losing the 70 profit and than some. I believe that in part 4 there are some interesting spots where i spew money away....
If its too late then don t worry about it, i am very grateful as is:-)
Cheerios, Mike
Keep on doing what u are doing Phil! You are great at it! Thx
I have some little recommendation on the side for you: Switch off your cards dealt animation - waiting this long to see 4 cards costs you a lot of hands per hour.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm glad you liked the video!

I know I already harped on this during the video, but I want to do so again. "Probably" betting river against the button or the initial raiser is not good enough :). You should definitely bet river here vs. all positions. You need to get a lot more comfortable going thinner for value on the river. My advice to you is this: Next session you play, just try to force yourself to be more optimistic with your hand reading and see how it goes. Basically, we need to recalibrate your instincts here - and I'm sure this is true for many others reading. They should try the same!
I already made a part 2 with the same video. No promises, but if I end up making a part 3, I'll use the last video.
Hey guys! praisospalter - thx, i ll try that (i didnt even know that u could turn that off)
@ Ernestas Romeika - you are probably right. I didnt even spot that cause the hand flashes by so quick. Like Phil said i have to loosen up preflop. A friend of mine once said that i should play normal tables for a change because then i would appreciate playable hands more. Playing Zoom i started tightening up because of the feeling that hands come quickly and are abundant (when in doubt just fold preflop).
On a sidenote: I have been playing poker recreationally for 15 years and more or less been a break even player. Never studying and actually not thinking about the game at all. And when i studied i never incorporated anything learned into my play. Autopiloting passing time in the evenings. 18 months ago i decided that either i learn the game and take it serious or stop completely. Just that decision and focusing more made me a profitable player at ZOOM10. The reason i wrote all that is to explain this: I am having a hard time getting rid of my bad habits from years of "pushing random buttons". Like that hand at 27:34 where i came into the pot for a small loose raise UTG. That is old Mike on a short autopiloting moment. The new Mike wouldnt do that. Anyway, thx for your advice!
Spielgscheit You're welcome! Something else to consider is PokerStars zoom has a steep rake, so loosening up a bit might not necessarily be a good idea. I used to play PLO25z and PLO50z and was breaking even over a decent sample. When analyzing my play & stats one thing that was always bugging me was the amount of rake I paid, I was paying over 20bb/100 for rake, and winning only about 0.3bb/100 for myself after rakeback. Some time this spring I switched to RIO poker and now I'm winning 15bb/100 in PLO50 due to much more generous rake structure.
Hey Ernestas! I thought about going to another site but i never considered RIO. In my mind, the average player at RIO is tougher than the average Stars player because of the attached training site. I imagined Rio to be a sharktank waiting for players like me. Half empty tables with tough players sitting out til recreational players sit down and then the table lights up with action. Hehe, is my vivid imagination going too far? Let me know what you think.
(And yeah, i did a pokerstars challenge in march where i had to complete an x amount of rake to get x amount of money. That was the first time i looked at the rake. Its actually ridiculous. I had a session where i grinded out 30 bucks in 3 hours and saw that i was raked for 50 bucks. and that makes it not interesting in the long run)
Hey Spielgscheit, yes, i think your vivid imagination of RIO is wrong ;) I play PLO25 on stars and PLO20 on RIO and that are my experiences so far:
- Rakeback at RIO is a lot more (like Ernestas said)
- It's more fun to play with the RIO software
- On average the RIO players are slightly better opponents (reason: on stars are more huge whales than on RIO)
- On stars i focus a lot on beating the huge whales (HUD is very important for ZOOM imo), on RIO i can focus more on learning the game and implement the strategies that we learn here on RIO.
- Overall i'm winning a bit more on stars (up to now, i hope that will change if i get used to the pool), but i learn a lot more playing on RIO and it makes way more fun.
I think you should try RIO and make your own experiences. If you don't use a HUD on stars, RIO might be a lot better for you since HUDs are not allowed. And even if you then still think the games are a lot tougher (which i don't think; they are a little bit tougher but rakeback is better) there might be something positive: You can learn to play against better opponents on average for a cheap price and use that experience on other sites on higher stakes. And isn't it a better feeling to pay the rake to RIO with owner Phil Galfond than to greedy Poker stars? ;)
Hey guys, thank you Phil Galfond; excellent video. I have been watching these Glalfond omaha videos since spring. They have improved my game considerably. I went from small winner/break even player to winning nicely. I had the same preconceived notion about RIO poker than Spielgscheit. Too many sharks - not worth playing. I made a small deposit just to take advantage of good campaings. To my surprise, the players are not much better than at stars. With my small depo playing 0.10/0.25 blinds I went on sick heater, also getting lucky, and I am up over 20 buy ins. I moved level up, and the players are only slighty better.
Here are observations about small stakes players at RIO and compared to stars.
The players are sizing tell boxes. Big bet is pretty much always nuts. You can do nicely basically never bluff catching vs. big bets.
The players play very straightforward. Not much slowplaying and 3 barrel bluffing.
Players have wider 3 betting ranges than stars(not just kk,aa). But their hand selections for 3betting are not necessarily good, and they dont play exceptionally well post flop.
The pots dont go 4 way to 5 ways. This is common at stars. I think it is more fun to play at RIO when you get play HU and 3 way pots, plus the software is good, which make playing more enjoyful. I also I hate playing 5 way pots because it feels like playing bingo, you pretty much just need to make the nuts or close to win pots. Or does anyone have good adjustments for 5 way pots, other than playing hands that do well multiway??
Regarding Galfond analysis; on the A438Q rb board I hate potting with AA. You are going to get a fold 90+% of the time at these stakes. If you bet 0.5 pot you are going to get called so much more often that IMO this will make you more money. SInce people are uncomfortable calling big bets with marginal hands this would be good pot bet bluffing spot for instance with A567 type hand.
P.s. I thought this corona spring was the worst ever. I had to stay in, but I decided to spend it studying Galfond and other videos. After 10+ years of grinding small/mid stakes tournaments(profitable every year though), I managed to bink my first 6figure score from a WSOP event :)). Thank you Phil Galfond, I´m sure watching omaha videos might have also improved my decision making process in NL Texas. I guess I can try to play bigger than 25cent games at Rio now :).
jools_c Thanks for your thoughts. You made a couple of good points. I ll give RIO a shot:-)
PS: Hehe, hell yeah i like supporting Phil way more than Poker Stars.
PPS: I just had an epiphany. I have always thought that i have to stay at Poker Stars because thats where all the players are. If everyone thought that then it will always stay that way...
great review video , we need more people on PLO normal table ...like 5 people only today on PLO 25 stars ....during a big part of the day . RIO eu will be allowed to France in a near future ?
the AA** call on the draw heavy board oop, seems not that ok for me. Some players have no bluff in this configuration. And there is very few players that are able to bluff this way a those limits

I've noticed our hero folded AK88 doublesuited in EP at 13:29, I think that should be an open as well, am I right?
Yes it's a raise unless your completely unsuited in Vision. Any suitedness is a pure open here

hi,
everyone who wants to try out spelling the screenname, try this funny combination:
spill (like spill over)
excite
now drop the first "e" in "excite" and you got "spill+xcite". thats basically his screenname.
for the very advanced: use "sh" for "s" and "c" in "spill+xcite".
the AA** call on the draw heavy board oop, seems not that ok for me. Some players have no bluff in this configuration. And there is very few players that are able to bluff this way a those limits
