No doubt the play in microstakes tournaments requires a different approach from mid/high stakes events and Owen Shiels discusses the differences between these tournaments and the player pool tendencies in tournaments with buy-ins under $5.

Owen, just getting back into poker and really like this video and the ones where you comment hand-by-hand on someone playing a smaller buyin MTT. Keep it up.

Do these concepts also apply to the multi table SNG’s like the 45/90/180mans? I assume they would since they are essentially small mtt’s.

Yes probably although you probably have quite a lot of regs in those who may or may not be too tight these days. Havent played one in 7 or 8 years so I'm not sure but I would imagine one of the best ways to crush these is to focus in on what the regs in these do badly. Do they overfold v certain lines, fold to often so small 3bs etc.

I'm so glad you talked about 3betting in the micros. I can't tell you how often I've heard (at other sites) that we need to be 3bet bluffing more in the micros because our opponents "play bad and they will just fold".

Despite it not making any sense to me, I tried it for a while. Guess what? No they don't. They don't like to fold preflop. It's a common complaint for micro players.

I started feeling like I was too nitty because I've basically only been 3betting with value hands.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that.

Going to finish the video now. Thanks man, great vid!

Hey. Just a note. As you get deeper into the tournament you certainly need to find spots to 3b as a bluff too. Playing just for value works really well in the beginning stages. It can often flip and 3 betting quite a lot as a bluff against certain opponents and on certain tables works very nicely as you get deep as players either fold to it too often or at least don't 4b as often as they should. Don't just think we should never 3b as a bluff in these. Just find the right spots to do it in.

Owen Shiels I think it’s often brought up as way to build a stack early. However, now I wonder how many times I’ve misunderstood it. I definitely do it some in the later stages but not enough I’m sure.

Thanks for clarifying that though. It’s given me a little more to think about.

Excellent video, Owen, thank you!
If you could do something similar any time for the general fields of $11 to $22 regular tournaments.

All the best.

Hi, Owen Shiels - This was a very informative video, thank you. I think that many of the topics that you discussed can be thoughtfully applied to micro-stakes cash games also, especially in regards to appropriate responses to under/over bluffing and "ABC" style play from our opposition, as well as responding to player pool tendencies generally. Nicely done!

Another excellent video Owen,

Pretty great observation skills about population tendencies at micros, points u stated should be alpha and omega for every micro to low stakes grinder.

Thx!

This is fantastic. I like how you simplified the information in this. I love MTTs and have been playing quite a bit on Poker Bros. Do you set goals for your ROI?

Hey Owen great video! I had a question about playing against super agro players. I find a lot of the time I do exactly what you mentioned in the video, let them do the betting for me. When it comes down to the river and im out of position, is checking first a profitable option or should I lead out here? I am finding a lot of players that see two calls will check back on the river and thus I could be losing value.

i agree that we need to overfold against turn and river raises , these player are mostly underbluffing. Nice video hope u can upload more this kind of video
