Excellent video. I enjoyed your understanding of each situation as well as your clear understanding of the strategy you implement.

Brilliant video, thanks! Do you think it has improved your overall game a lot learning HU? Is it something you would recommend?

Luke Johnson 4 years ago

Thank you CatorMan

Yes, my overall game has improved through learning HU. It's hard to say how much — I guess I think about suits a lot more than I used to, haha. With that being said, I got into HU because I was frankly quite bored with ring. I wouldn't recommend studying it unless you are serious about it.

Nice to watch you play live putting the last two concept videos into action. Study videos will be interesting to see as well. Definitely some interesting spots to review. Impressive how quickly you figure out how the suits interact as blockers and unblockers.

Thank you proverbspoker :)

Study videos to come!

A couple question for you: how did you find this video compared with the first two deeper dives? Which do you prefer? Is it close?

proverbspoker 4 years ago

Luke Johnson I got more out of the first two because it was so new to me. I would learn more from a live play and discuss like this if I understood the theory you were operating from already (which I wouldnt if you didnt do your first two). Im very happy with both and dont have a preference other than enjoying the 3 videos general format progression from Teach -> Show Implementation

Great vid. Do you think having 1 sizing in every spot before the river is also a good simplification for 6 max?

Luke Johnson 4 years ago

Yes, absolutely. Mixing is really hard. Playing with a split game tree anywhere before the river is what I'd like to call a "total mindfuck". :)

Talking fast is WAAYYYY BETTER than talking slow. Some coaches I wish RIO had a 2x feature. Talking fast I feel is a compliment to your intellect.

Would suggest letting the two tables take up most of the screen and get rid of the replayer and note pad, just have those on the side and bring them in when needed. Looking forward to the next video to see if the 8d5d hero call from villain was bad or not.

Keep up the great work! If live play is hard to talk through, one table is fine as well or post audio for deeper analysis. Post Audio allows you to pull in PIO as well. Peter Clarke did something like this with six max.

1.5x isn't fast enough? haha

Yep roger that, I agree with your thoughts on the editing. My bad.

I will try some post audio and steal imbajimba format of studying everything in advance to then gently relay to the viewers. I found his efforts A+.

Thanks for checking this video out everybody! I hope you enjoyed! :)

I have a couple questions if you wouldn't mind taking the time:
How did you find this video compared with the first two deeper dives? Which do you prefer? Is it close? Have you any feedback on what you specifically enjoyed and did not enjoy, so that I can do my best to improve moving forward?

Thank you :)

I think for the audience doing post audio with sims ready to pull up is going to be better. I think there is definitely something to be said for hearing your thought process with the time constraints though, so I would do a mix.

I do think in terms of improving it is pretty much impossible for a live play video to ever be as useful as a theory video. Especially if we can extrapolate the knowledge learnt to other spots. I think the first two theory videos did such a great job at explaining 'why' PIO does stuff, which is tough to do and even tougher to explain and something that you are very good at. I would love to see as many of them as possible.

RunItTw1ce 4 years ago

25% live, 50% post audio + PIO, & 25% theory.

With theory could also mix in some exploit type stuff or just some simplified strategies with heuristics people can use. Henry Lister's recent video goes over some SRP BTN vs BB (seems every coach does this same formation) but mixing in these videos with simplified cbet strategies (1 size instead of 2-3 sizes) and heuristics on what hands you are choosing to bet / check helps quite a bit, not just your precise hand.

I would say don't be afraid to dumb down an "elite video." I know the premise is that Elite videos are supposed to target audiences that already have a solid foundation, but poker has changed so fast over the last couple of years, I'm not surprised that 80% of Elite members don't know half the stuff you are putting out. Also a lot of people who do know this stuff are not paying to watch training videos here. I would approach it similar to if you were to make a course on either HU or Six max. Start with some "advanced basics" if that's a term. Then branch out to more advanced stuff. Then later on down the road, maybe if you are coaching students, can share this "course" with your students as one of their learning paths rather than jumping around to different leaks. There are not many if any solid blue prints on modern poker out there. Could be a real money maker if you come up with a course like this.

Most importantly do what you feel is most comfortable for you and what you have the most knowledge of. I love how you admit to not knowing certain spots rather than making something up that might lead people down the wrong path. I wish all coaches were like this.

I like that breakdown; Post audio does seem the nut way to go about it.

I'm going to be recording some work in GTO trainer, as I imagine it'd work well in a video format; crashcoursing one node is a lot better than a bunch of different spots, too.

Absolutely yea, I will only do what is comfortable with me. So far, I've enjoyed the video making process. It's been challenging, in a good way. Seeing the feedback is awesome.

Luke Johnson The only trainer I think the community has a problem with so far is poker scientist that Henry uses. All other trainers have gotten positive feed back from the coaching videos I saw. I think Lucid was the best one so far because you can import your own ranges, check out Psek video on that. Other trainers seem to be tied for 2nd place though. Look forward to them!

And lastly, I'm working on a fix with RIO to reupload this video with a slightly better visual quality. My apologies on messing that up!

RunItTw1ce 4 years ago

I hope this wasn't directed towards me... I was watching on my phone, so take the suggestion of moving note pad and replayer out of the way with a grain of salt. No need to apologize.

Luke Johnson 4 years ago

Nope all good, the video isn't as crisp as it should be. Working on a minor fix to this. Hope it wasn't too annoying for yourself or anybody else!

Great Video Luke,

i really enjoy that you are adding alternative nodes to every decision. Like „this is 2/3 or check for me. For x% im going to do y“ click RNG, play... Great style and approach of thinking imo.
I also enjoy liveplay from time to time esp for warm up. Maybe one idea for next recording: We could turn off sounds of the stars client. But this is just nit picking: otherwise great video!

Luke Johnson 3 years, 11 months ago

Thank you very much RaoulFlush glad you like my approach :)

I agree, I think it's a nice twist every now and again — I still plan for the majority of my videos to be deeper PIO dives!

Nit picking is totally fine! Noted moving forward. Note, however, that I have another liveplay coming up (in 6max this time), where you will hear the system sounds, as it's already been recorded!

Cheers :)
