In this $1/$2 FRNL series, Mike talks more in depth and responds to questions he gets from students about common situations he faces and gives special focus on how to decide when to deviate from standard plays.

why are you 3xing the btn?

This is a tough question to answer, but I'll do my best. The quick and easy answer is "because I want to", but I realize that's not quite what you're asking.

So, for the most part, I want to do things a little different than other people. This makes it so that they "should" adjust to how I'm playing differently...

3xing the button vs 100bb stacks is something I can do that I feel like is harder to play against, but that doesn't sacrifice any ev by doing so. The standard reason people want to minraise the button is to give themselves a better price on their bluff. This is a good reason, but there are also good reasons for wanting to 3x such as wanting to play a bigger pot in position against weaker opposition.

I don't feel like there is a single right answer to much of what goes on preflop. Instead, to me it's more like chess openings in that there are a bunch of valid ways to play. What's best for you will be determined by the rest of your poker game.

Really great video Mike! Highlighting the active table really helps follow the action. I think this is your best video yet. Why do I say that? I take notes during all your videos. The volume of notes I took on this one went thru the roof! Some of the highlights are: 16:18 discussion of the flop and taking the line bet, check, bet as a bluff; nice insight as to how you add a new line to your repetroire; and at 40:09 a great discussion of playing KK from the blinds against an early raiser and how to get value. These are just some of my notes...good work Mike!
