Thanks so much for this video Jae. Really helpful. You've really motivated me to step up my study, I purchased a solver about a month ago and have only run about 15 sims on it so far. Thanks again man

Way to keep it real Jae Kim, and thank you for your last video as you always try to keep it as honest as possible. You can really feel that.

Now onto my questions:

-In your opinion, what are the top 1% mtt players doing that the rest of the 99% aren't doing? Is it a matter of following the GTO ranges (pre/post) and taking the riskier/less ventured PIO lines more consistently? Or have they successfully adopted GTO to exploit and find a nice balance between?
-What is your view on GG staking? I've recently started to get into it seriously and I was wondering if you ever thought of it as a real possibility to do well in.
-You mentioned that you didn't take the path that many of the current crushers did, but it does seem like you know the path. Aren't you at least tempted to venture down the same well laid out road and test yourself to see if you could ever reach those heights? Or are you too "weathered" for such an adventure?
-Please link your URL whenever you get the chance, I will definitely follow it.

Thanks!

Thank you Mephisto.

  1. I go into it at the end of the video. I just think they think very deeply about poker and don't limit themselves to just PIO/GTO. And they often have a very strong community around them + bankroll that just reinforces these advantages.
  2. I won't comment too hard on this. I'll just say it has no fees.
  3. I did go for it. I left my job at Stars at the end of 2018 to go for it. I had a great year in 2019 with a few big chances at "life changing" money. I still think my yearly EV in poker is pretty high but the MTT lifestyle doesn't suit me any more.

Hi Jae thanks for the videos! You made me curious whether you know me from Hearthstone as well. I'm shooting for the top too, already working on most things you mentioned so good to know I am not missing any secret ingredients, but finding a support system has been insanely hard. Reached out to people but it seems most grinders have their own groups already and most of my poker friends are a bit more casual. I've read your whole 2+2 blog and I'll make sure I keep following your future writings!

Jae Kim 4 years, 2 months ago

Hey Cydonia. I definitely know your name :) I remember reading your story in Spring/Worlds and was rooting for you. I'm actually pretty good friends with a few HS players. We're trying to "go pro" right now as a side thing. Would love to speak with you. Will send you a DM.

Sad to see you go dude, you were one of my favorite coaches on the site! Always kept it real,a few jokes here and there and super good breakdowns of hands. This video was sick and definitely made me think about the future,my game and how I can work more/harder.I wish you well in your job at GG and hope you knock pokerstars off it's throne for the number one spot! Thanks for the candid Jae and good luck in your future endeavors.

I really hope no one takes your investing advice as its not even investing advice and just gambling (putting 10% of your roll on Conor fight). Poker players struggle with this, but its the non-sexy path that is the most prudent.

Also, very confused about your 'foolproof plan to make a million in poker' when your outlook on poker was so immensely negative. These statements are very conflicting.

Jae Kim 4 years, 2 months ago

Thanks for your comment. I think I should clarify in this comment since I didn't go in depth in the video due to it being off topic.

  1. The main point was I really wish I had opened my eyes to investment opportunities outside of poker. I disagree with you on the Conor vs Floyd fight. Here's why:

On Betfair Exchange I was getting a bet down on Floyd at -350. My theory is UK fans all wanted to bet small amounts on Conor (there was a large majority of wagers on Conor, but the $ totals favored Floyd).

If I put -350 into a Kelly calculator, even if you were getting the -400 the fight closed at, and you put in 90% Win Prob for Floyd, full Kelly suggests you bet 50% of your roll. Now nobody knows what the true win probability was. I'm not an expert just a fan but at the end of the fight looking at Floyd's strategy I put Floyd as easily 90%+ equity, just have to fade him blowing out a body part or taking a dive to set up a trilogy.

It's conceivable you could have got a bet down at 65/35 odds in Floyd's favor where he's more like a 98% favorite (factoring in injury + diving). In these cases, especially if you're young and don't have much of a roll, you need to have the heart to bet everything.

More recent example is there were spots in the Biden vs Trump odds where it was just literally free money. My theory again is Trump supporters didn't want to admit he was going to lose.

  1. Re: the Foolproof Plan to make a Million. I forgot to add airquotes to the "Foolproof Plan." The point being the blueprint is there but it's very hard to follow. Just like anyone could get a six pack just by following the plan. Which is true. But 98% of people don't. And I didn't want my outlook to come across negative. The game has been good to me overall and my current career is in poker as well.

One other thing I want to add. This is why you want a crew of 2-3 solid people. I live life generally trusting the analysis of smart people to various degrees. If a friend I value comes to me and says I need to invest in something, sure I'll take a flier on it. If you can't trust a friend for $300 or $1K or $5K, why are you even friends with them?

Or even someone not a friend. Go back and read deepfuckingvalue's posts on GME and watch his YT videos. He obviously sunran to have a meme community go and back the stock up. But you're telling me you wouldn't take a $200-$1K reasonable flier on it? Maybe I'm degen but I certainly would have.

When I look back at my past five years, there were a lot of spots were just having a better network or keeping my eyes open to things outside of poker would have led to incredible investment opportunities.

Frankie Carson 4 years, 2 months ago

In a vacuum yea that might have been a advantageous bet, idk. My point is more broad. This is a topic I feel strongly about, it is my field of work.

Yes, poker players need to look beyond poker 100% agree but honestly this issue is much more broad then poker players it effects many in many different fields.

Taking fliers off Reddit as ones investment strategy is a surefire way to be working until close to your death. The few that are lucky enough to roll 7 7 7 on the slot machine will be well known and make themselves so. They will sell books and have a YouTube channel. But this is the tip of the iceberg, most will lose and be submerged. You never here of these people.

Everyone should just keep it simple, investing isn't rocket science. Just don't gamble your future.

hey man, good luck on your new way outside of playing poker!
Now, since you are on the inside at gg poker id like to ask something that has been bothering me for a long time as a tournament professional:
Me too I am glad that sites like GG came up to challenge stars, GG has great tournaments by now id say better ones than stars even. However, just like stars the structures are mostly really bad. Back in the day the structures on pokerstars were really good and that changed gradually to the worse over the course of the last years.
Especially mid and lowstakes, but now even highstakes tournaments have really bad structures on all sites. I heard that argument before like "well the amateurs dont want to play for that long" but I don't buy that one bit, back when stars was amazing the fields were huge and structures great. Even though ofc americans were allowed back then but still obviously a ton of those fields were just amateurs.
It is simply more proftiable for the sites themselves to make the structures worse, so that players are circulating the money more and pay more rake. I dont believe in the theory of "evening the playing field" to give amateurs more of a shot against the pros either. I am sure many amateurs also enjoy to get a longer playing experience for their money, in the end with neither a great nor bad structure they will win anyways, they play for fun.
Why cant we have more regular tournaments with great structures again, like the super tuesday back in the days with 20min blind structure? And make low and mid stakes mtts 15min blinds again etc etc. This will make the experience for everyone involved better. You can still offer turbo mtts or faster mtts, I bet the fields in the better structures over time will be much bigger, especially when offering good guarantees.

As I said good luck man, was fun battling with you over the years, also nice to see you on twitch and here

Jae Kim 4 years, 2 months ago

My man :)

Are the structures really that bad? I never felt this way really and I also don't think Stars structures have changed that materially over the past 10 years even (I've seen the templates!).

Feel free to DM me any feedback or on the Discord channel. I try to avoid talking about GG in general since I'm shilling my team but we have FT blinds rollback to 40bb AVG and PASSIONATE experts on the team who are constantly updating and monitoring our structures.
