POSTED Mar 06, 2025

Freenachos returns from his hiatus with a new series where he explores how to move from low stakes to high stakes and avoid the common pitfalls along the way.

The first installment illustrates how to effectively use deliberate practice to push your current skills to the next level with the example of defending vs c-bets in 3-bet pots as the in-position preflop caller.

You can get access to the Anki flashcards Patrick uses throughout the video as a bonus right here →

27:45 3BP IP PFC on 832r SB vs HJ interesting that AsTs is indifferent but KQs is pure calling. Want a stronger top pair in a low SPR turn spot. Makes sense when you break down the combos that we are dominated by. Also KQs gains extra EV because a turn K is like a pure barrel for the 3 bettor.

Yeah, one thing you can do in solver is show the EV for both hands when they turn a pair. The EV of turning a K or Q with KQ is significantly higher than specifically turning a T with AT (due to it being dominated more often and dominate villains range less often).

31:20 also a cool tip to continue with lower PP that matches the suits on the board. 1) because on a turn flush draw our EV goes lower. 2) We are more less likely to have a set on a flush completing runout.

Why is QJc calling and QsJs folding? I was thinking QsJs blocks KsQs KsJs and has bdfd equity.

Yea I was wondering about the QJcc vs QJss difference too. I suspect it has to do with SB potentially having more bluffs in his cbetting range that have the Qs or Js compared to the Qc Jc. E.g. betting more AxJs or QsTs compared to him having the c in bluffs. Then we unblock more bluffs when holding cc.

But just a guess, especially since the solver often seems to mix a quite healthy amount of cbets with non bdfd combos in many sims. So not sure how strong that effect actually is.

Very nice video, I think as far as flop defense with pairs goes it's critical to get preflop right. The solver is playing those spots as pure continues but it has the pairs so rarely. as a hand like 33 doesn't open pure + defends vs 3b so rarely

Glad to see you are back here making videos!
Here at ~13.40 you talked about nodelocking turns and rivers to encapsulate player pool tendencies, in order to extrapolate back to the flop strategy.

Can you tell me how you did that? Did you go through every combination of turn and river card and nodelock them one by one, or is there an easy way to do it?

Hey Mat, you can use the set incentive future in PIO for that. In a future video I will show how to do this :)
