great video man, ive been thinking on these topics for years. What do you think about the possibility of reverse-icm? Ive been thinking in some spots early in a tournament (regular tournament that can be played very often, no special mtt) , at a blind stage that one reaches easily very often, there can be some spots where gambling with slightly negative cev for the possibility of a bigger stack and more future ev coudl actually turn out to be +$ev (say you are facing 3 all ins in front of you with a 15bb stack they all have you covered, and say you have a hand that turns out to be just slightly -cev to call here).
Another thought that came up to me at some point: On the one hand, icm assumes that everyone is equally skilled. So if you feel like you are the best player left with a medium stack, this may lead to you thinking you should be even tighter than icm in some spots, right? But what im thinking, actually winning a tournament at a decently high frequency when going deep is also very important, as we also on average spend $X to get to this point. These $X that we spend on average to get to the final 9 players of say a 1000 player field, doesnt this make say a 4th place 5th place etc that we could ladder up to way less attractive to us now?

Just throwing these two of my wilder thoughts out here since it is on the topic, very aware they could both be total bs but to me it doesnt seem so obvious at all though

Hey,
I don't think taking -cev plays is a good strategy, but in tournaments where we effectively apply a lot of pressure on the money bubble or at the final table, I think it makes sense to choose decisions that have similar EV but involve playing bigger pots, so when we win we can wield our big stack effectively.

The opposite of this true as well, that if we think our table is really soft and we don't want to take thin gambles because our bb/100 is very high and the big stacks might not try to own the bubble.

I would add that in certain push fold spots ICM has the caller calling extremely tight (so tight that I suspect its wrong) so in spots like this I wouldn't recommend calling tighter than ICM.

In general I agree with your premise that we should be aware of the situation in the tournament not be afraid to gamble for the big stack, especially if we are not near any big payjumps.

thank you, that some of the super tight icm spots seem wrong/too tight is my intuitive feeling as well sometimes. As you say in the video all of those are just models/not complete solutions, but thats what makes mtt poker so fun anyways lots of undiscovered stuff out there

Almost 3 years later, I feel that this video and your previous one are drastically underrated. These topics were very much on my mind and I thank you deeply for taking the time to create this content. As I am creating my maps via PIO scripting, and using ICMIZER almost daily, your insights are a reminder that they are only a few data points to answer the larger question of what is the "best" play for you in any given spot. You have given me permission to go beyond the toy games and sims, to incorporate more criteria in my quest to become a better poker player. Thank you.
