Great video Dan! One of the best, not just for the main event, but any poker game you’re in. I generally never talk strategy ever in any game that I’m playing whether it’s cash or tournaments. Because why the heck do you want to give your opponents any info about your game or your thought process.
Cool video. This seems on topic so I'll ask it. I honestly skip tons of tournaments because I think the tournament crowd (in particular WSOP) in general is annoying and kind of full of themselves. Do you have any struggles with this? I understand it's still possible to just be a professional, do the job and headphone it, is this just the way?
I mostly deal with it by skipping more tournaments or late regging more.
I suppose it depends on how exciting of a spot the poker game is either financially or other (trying to win a bracelet etc) . If you have similar earn playing online and you don’t enjoy live tourneys… easy game.
I sometimes try to imagine these big field tourneys are satellites. If you make day 2 and 10x your stack it becomes a situation you’re (hopefully) excited to play.
Like you were saying, my main advice is invest in good noise cancelling headphones. I now I travel to tournaments with proper ear plugs, since you can’t wear headphones on feature tables .
Re: poker mental games and meta section... this reminded me of one of my favorite lines from Doyle when he had made an adjustment at a WPT event to Patrick Antonius' continued aggression 3 handed and Brunson called an all-in with 33 vs A2. "You say 'how can I make that call?'; how can you make that bet! We're playing poker, not solitaire." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEVbzWbYQ-Q
A possible exception for artificial bubbles: if you have a particularly tough table it may be worth sacrificing a small amount of ev tightening up a little where you may have a softer table/better position the next day. Curious to what others think.
Along a similar note if you have a player at your table who’s giving it away, how much time in the day left in the day can impact how willing you are to take a marginal spot
Of course don’t get too carried away with this sort of thinking and generally play your cards the way they need to be played
