I liked this subject matter and format. Anytime I can learn what world class players are doing to focus and be in the right headspace to play poker better is invaluable. I also like your other videos as well and look forward to whatever content you create at RIO.
think it puts a lot of things into perspective when were trying to the best poker players we can, and you can easily get distracted or undisciplined with your work ethic.
I enjoyed hearing how you give yourself permission to approach things in a way which will serve you best (e.g. approaching different stakes, applying different levels of intensity, being aware of different mental states, and so on). I feel like that kind of flexibility and openness is a good example for a lot of us. Poker advice can be quite prescriptive at times, and I think players can end up getting burdened with a sense of "I must perform in x way in all places at all times." I got a sense from you of an important question/approach being "What does this particular situation require?" A time-for-everything type wisdom... Sometimes there's a +EV grind that invites our max effort and endurance, sometimes our mental states interfere with intuition, and sometimes it's snowing in Colorado :)
I agree with this wholeheartedly. I loved seeing the realistic approach of someone preparing to play (and actually playing) the highest stakes. There is a lot of poker mindset advice out there that is basically "grindset" content that doesn't deal well with the fact that we're all human beings who don't have infinite attention spans.
Really like this video Dan Smith . Although strategy is great I agree that there's a variety of disciplines that contribute to being a successful (and overall life happy) professional, that type of stuff is not really taught often. Very cool to see your ideas on these topics, and I for one would certainly look forward to more philosophical videos like this from you in the future.
In particular I'm going to try the Tim Ferris exercise on gratitude you recommended and have had the idea of dealing with anxiety/stress both on a temporary and later more permanent level on my mind a lot.
Great video - a lot of the concepts resonated quite well. It's encouraging/relatable (?) knowing that you struggle with a lot of many of the same things I struggle with at much lower stakes.
Dan loved this type of video. I've listened to it twice already and it'll be something I'll come back to over the years. Just real talk. Thank you for being so open.
Top content Dan! Like your said solver stuff can be technical and tedious sometimes, and listening your wisdom regarding the off-table work is just great! Def love your change of pace, please do more in the future! :)
