Nice one!!!
I think have something to ask which is quite illogical to me While playing poker and especially when it comes to last sessions of the day/week I have feeling of booking results. For example do hit and run pretty much
Doesn't make much logic to me whatsoever, was trying to dig into it - if lose more/(everything from that day) ''nightmare scenario'' and finding optimal response to that was quite easy. So that attitude (hit/run) should only be working when I am not thinking much/have something else in mind. And that I suppose can be if emotions are overwhelming me, or previous results.
Thanks :)
One thing it also shows is that you think your poker is over, in your mind it seems to be many poker sessions instead of one big one with breaks. It is almost like you want to always be booking a win before a break.
There are times where it might be helpful to do so, but if you always do it, it will make you play with much more fear once you win a little, and worse yet, this can grow into a bigger problem, perhaps there was a time where you could easily play until you were up 5 buy ins and then all of a sudden, years later after a downswing, you already stop after winning 1 buy in, but you chase losses and go down say 5 buy ins before you stop.
This is just one way this can grow into a bigger problem.
Find out for yourself when it can be beneficial to quit after winning some and don't over do it... you sometimes also have to play through some of these a little.
Think how it went with moving up in stakes, at first you felt more influenced by bigger money losses, until you became used to it.
Great videos man! I always find in them something new, or something I forgot.
When I watch (listen) to your videos it's like I see a light that guides me back on track and I realize all the deviations I made from it.
Writing the comment I realize that I have to put your videos in my monthly routine, at least every 2 weeks I have to see one, it's easy to forget when you are thinking strategy and ranges all day that without a good mindset you will never be a happy player (person).
Hey Paul Toda thank you so much for the comment and I am very happy to hear.
Completely agree with you, it is easy to forget the sounds in between all the noise...
I am already working on a video that talks a little bit about that.
Frequently coming back to things we too easily take for granted.
As you wrote, we don't even have to do it every day or even every week, but doing it perhaps every week here and there will help for it to not fall asleep.
Things like mindfulness and being present and aware of all the beauty that surrounds us and also aware of where we are not aligned with reality but in our own dream world.
Thanks again for the comment
Im happy to see Im not the only person who wants your videos weekly. Maybe RIO can increase your contract to every Sunday or every Other Sunday at the very least. I pick Sunday because usually its a day people take off and just relax and as you said appreciate the beauty around them.
I am watching your older videos. I have been a big fan of Tao myself. So I always find it interesting to see perspectives on it.
The master does nothing, yet he leaves nothing undone
Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?
Most difficult about this is not rationalize yourself into passivity. "I am remaining unmoving and I do nothing". How have you tackled that reasoning yourself?
Non-Action or Non-Doing is not about doing nothing, it is about being in flow, aligned with your core being and the universe.
So, when you ride the bike, you are performing non-action.
When you write a letter with your hands to someone (assuming one can handwrite), you are performing non-action, sure you think about the words you want to write, but they immediately translate from your mind to the paper without you interfering in thinking, oh how do I move my hand to write the following letters...
It is when you are not interfering anymore, when you are freely expressing that which is in you without worrying about anything, essentially, when you are not thinking too much. Yes some thinking is very useful and beneficial, so there is a fine balance, but even the thinking can be performed in non-action.
Great Comment, thank you
So what is happening in this perspective when you don’t do it?
For example, as a professional I can imagine you need to grind for a living. You are in a downswing and you lay on the couch … this is not non-action, but what is it if you decide not to do what you need to do? (In this example; not grinding. But could also be not 3 betting while you should etc)
You will have a hard time understanding and truly living this unless you change the narrative.
If you need to do things, it is much harder to perform non-doing.
You choose to do things, but you are ok with any outcome.
However you also understand that within the structure or construct of your living circumstances, certain things are more preferable to be executed than others and thus you do them, however, you do not do them anymore, because you NEED to. You have many options of what you do and you decide for this (working), because it is the one that makes the most sense within the construct you live in.
You accept that you are currently experiencing life in a specific context, you can change that context, but it is not easy for anyone and everyone to do so, because when you are still attached to the results, then the non-doing or non-action becomes a lot more difficult, as you now start following goals, desires, attachmetns, all those then lead to judgements (this is good, this is bad, I want more of this).. and now you are in the place of, oh, I want more, I need more, which automatically puts you into a subconscious state of not being enough, not being that perfect being that goes through an experience (human existance).
Think about riding a bike to work, do you overadjust to every imbalance that you experience or do you perhaps not even notice those much at all?
Do you now think, omg, I need to ride better and do a much better job or else I will fall?
Or do you just keep on doing what you do, riding your bike to work or wherever you want to go and make the proper adjustments without too much interference of your mind?
When you were not yet proficient at riding the bike, some more conscious thinking when into it, but even as a child, you already started realizing that you can't think too mcuh, you feel and you execute.
Why would you lay on the couch?
If you have a 9 to 5 job, there is outside regulation, when you play professional poker, there is not, you need to self regulate everything. Then the question is, how deep do you want to get entangled with specific ideas on execution and how far are you willing to let go of attachment, desire, judgement and these things?
Human life is a symbiosis of many things. There is a physical, a mental and a spiritual component to it. If you leave out one of them to an extreme level, you will find some form of dissonance in your life quite often.
An example that comes to mind is the workaholic that makes tons of money, perhaps even works out often and is fit, yet kind of unhappy.
Or someone that only works out, but is unhappy because he does not have the material success or job he or she wants.
It is not non-action, because you are going against something you desire, that you are attached to and thus in your own world, you are not at peace with what you are doing (lying on the sofa doing nothing).
If you are at peace, that is a different story.
Hell for example is a place in your mind, not a physical place one goes to.
This place comes to be, when you are not in harmony with yourself, which comes from attachment, desires, because you want something and you are not doing it, because somehow something with it is off for you but you can't figure out that something is.
Again, you are not at peace.
When you don't threebet, where you learned you should, similar thing.
In your mind or based on what you learned you should 3bet, yet you are not.
Usually that can be traced to an attachment to money and a fear to lose it or a fear to face larger variance.
Would you also not 3bet if the money were not real or if the stakes you played were way way lower?
If I recall correctly, you play micros and not professionally, and that you sometimes just go hard on 3betting (3betting time).
When you are not performing non-action, ask yourself, why?
What is the attachment that leads to some form of procrastination and perhaps anxiety to do something?
For some, they might not play, because they are feeling like impostors or something similar and they are just expecting that at some point reality will catch up with them and they will be shown that they are not the winners they thought they are.
Overall they do not want to face reality, because of the belief that it might be different than what they want.
you guys have nice comments here :) so I would like to participate as well. Will try to provide ''problem'' and what I think about it
1)Whats the problem: Not accepting myself for who I am
2)What issues it brings: low confidence, anger as self-protection, ego, envy
3)How it shows in real life: I might see someone outside and think in my soul (ahhh I wish I was him, nice hair/car/body/gf etc)
4)How it shows in poker: I want to be better than this m*f winning reg(based on his graphs), I studied more (likely true), I play better (most likely true also) but damn why it bothers me that much
5)Possible solutions: Accept myself, be at easy, self-reflection
6)Ideal scenario: I started to get envy again and feel stressed when see person who are better than me (for most obvious parameters like success/appearance) but letting it go. Not judging, just noticing and moving on
That's cool. Actually also I noticed something interesting. When it comes to me* (mostly emotional part), why logic isn't working (even experience in that area doesn't help that much)?
*It is like you know what you should be doing and it is inside your mind, but having so much resistance to do so
Will try to bring an example: 1)You understand and self-reflected multiple times why you shouldn't be envy(pretty detrimental), yet you still mostly are!
2)You know what short term variance is meaningless, yet you upset after bad session
3) You know you shouldn't be scared of ghosts/dogs/cats and you even can write down dissertation about it, but it doesn't work! Still scared!
I will give a quick but incomplete answer now.
Emotions and what is deeply learned overwrites logic.
In the Dog example, you would have to learn over time, how to get close to a dog and not experience harm, many many times before you actually start to learn it.
If you do it all just in your mind, it will take a much longer time, if not forever, because something inside of you does not trust the purely theoretical part vs the experienced part of the situation.
Envy or Jealousy is slightly different, but kind of similar.
As it is something happening in your mind, where you have practiced specific thought patterns for many years and you simply believe this or that to be true and right. (I talk about this a little in the next video).
Your Belief that something is so, you thinking you actually know this, is where things are messed up. Because you only see an incomplete picture and you think it is enough to judge, because you see a more complete one on yourself but not on the others, you just extrapolate the data.
Would you say that waiting, is the same as doing nothing? I guess you could be waiting to when you feel like playing or something, and if that means your laying on the couch watching tv is doing nothing because it’s not bringing you toward your goals.
I had a great session yesterday, won a couple buy ins. There was lots of excitement at the casino, another table 1/3 there was over 50k at the table!
Yet today, I had a bad sleep, felt more groggy, so I dragged myself back to the casino, after I ate, did some errands, I played for a few hours, wasn’t feeling the best, the table specifically I was at today was nitty limpy slow and I was getting frustrated, although I folded QQ pre flop correctly in a spot, I ended up break even for the session, whereas if I had lost I would wish I was break even lol
Brings me to your comments about finding your vacation, happy place, when you need you can go to when you’re stressed out or mentally strained. Happy Gilmores happy place with the beer haha
We’ve talked about this before! During and after sessions, just taking a mental break. Breathing!
Waiting and doing nothing. They do look similar at times from the outside, but what matters is what is going on internally.
Waiting means, there is something you are waiting for. which can be difficult.
Doing nothing, like just sitting down and watching tv you are just doing that without having that other thing on your mind.
If you can shut down so much that you do not have the other thing on your mind, that is great and in a way that is what you are trying to do when waiting.
You are trying to get to that place where you are no longer worried or anticipating that other thing as strongly, but instead are experiencing the present moment, either relaxed or with focus, depending on what you are doing.
Going to your happy place is simply a way to support your need to calm down and be present again
