Great video. This is a beginner question but in the first hand, is the reason QJ proceeds more over KJ or even over pairs because it has better blocking capabilities (I.e. it blocks straights etc)?
Thanks! With QJ having the Q blocker does matter some for blocking QT specifically but the bigger reason for preferring to continue QJ over AJ, KJ, AA, and KK is added equity vs important parts of BB's value range. Against (QT, T7) we have just 4% with KsKc but over 12% with QcJc thanks to our 3 gutshot outs. Less obviously, we also perform better against 2 pair - vs (J9, 98), the 2 pair combos Pio mainly raises, KsKc has 27.5% while QcJc has 33.3%.
Welcome! Great analyses. I think it is easier if replayer reviews are done with stacks in big blinds. Hopefully we get to see some full vpip tourney reviews. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm certainly happy to use big blinds in the replayer if most viewers prefer it. I'm trying to figure out how to use the HM3 replayer for full tourney reviews, it's a little glitchy for American sites but I intend to figure it out and do some full every hand VPIP tourney reviews soon.
great to have you on board! Nice first video, I really enjoyed you laying out your thought process and the questions you have asked yourself. Maybe in future vids you can make a small pause and encourage viewers to try and answer these questions for themselves, like "what %% of range does Cbet here and for which size(s), how often do we lead on the Ts..." and also encourage people to give reasons, e.g "range advantage, small bet folds out a lot of OOP air, no leads as we eliminate a lot of flushes from our range by just x/c...".
Are you going to review any PLO hands from the past or just focus on mtt? How do you stay passionate after doing so well a decade ago? I would want to retire and live off the interest.
Not planning any PLO videos at the moment but if there's demand for it I'd be happy to, might be more infotainment than anything though :)
I've always been passionate about poker and money has always been a secondary motivator for me. Aside from a few brief periods when my mental health was a challenge, I've continued to enjoy poker and especially the learning process and competitive aspect.
Thought it was a solid first video. The mic might be a little too close though, interferes with the audio quite a bit. Does your contract specify mtt, PLo, NL, live cash, or can you make whatever video you want? I will say there is very little live cash videos on this site that might attract more members. You really have to go back years to find live cash videos. Cardrunners used to have series videos like "moving up stakes" both for cash and sngs. I remember watching brystar and sixpeppers for cash games and jackle69 for sngs. Would love rio to make some of these series.
Thanks for the feedback, I haven't heard anyone else say that about the audio but I will keep an ear out for it and adjust as necessary.
I can make whatever videos I want, I've been focused on NLH primarily for the past 2 years so going to stick to that for now. I will mix in some live cash videos and I actually already made one that should be on the site pretty soon. That one is $2/5 and $5/10 on Ignition, let me know what else you'd like to see.
Nice to see more ignition videos. You, Tyler, and Tariq all make ignition videos. Nice to see sites other than stars. I think the GG poker 200NL rush Gary started making are quite popular as well. Looking forward to them. Thank you
Thanks! I would say in general I've noticed Pio plays pretty conservatively with bad 2 pair in many spots, often checking back turns one wouldn't expect it to for example. Actually folding is quite different though and totally a result of this tight range we gave BB. In practice we'd need to be pretty confident in our read to fold, but mixing in some flop checkbacks is a less risky deviation of sorts.
Hey Brian
(I used to be a cardrunner. Have always been a fan.)
I want to push back on the last poster's comment and your reply.
If you wanted to elaborate a bit on the 'making sense' part of your reply it may make the situation a bit clearer for me.
From my perspective the situation is v straightforward: you are Mr (online) PLO, Mr isildur1 killer. You're NOT Mr NLHE!!!
(Sorry :) )
Poker has evolved a lot since then. I both think that I was one of the very best PLO players pre-Black Friday and that RIO's current PLO coaches are better PLO players now and better suited to making PLO training videos than I am. I do plan to circle back to studying PLO at some point, but being the best NLH player I can be + raising my 20-month-old daughter is about all I can handle right now :)
A classy answer as always Brian, good luck in the WSOP!
Now this being the internet, you have to expect some trolling: I feel you’re being overly modest. I do not doubt you have the utmost respect for the RIO coaches. I DO doubt you thinking they’re better (HU) plo players than yourself. (And I include Phil in that.)
My reasoning: hu plo is a v straightforward format, no? And you’ve got almost 15 years experience in it. And with some of those @ the top top level in the game.

Cool first video Brian. Surprised we are letting go of most of bottom two by the turn on the first hand that was node locked tight xraise.

Really great video, Brian Hastings, though I expected nothing less :)
Welcome to the team!
Yah. Plo video please. You great player and still room for different approaches to that game I think.
I've played less than 1k hands of PLO cash this year. Possible in the future but doesn't make any sense for me right now.
