Good video, Id like to see part 3. One question regarding the 66 hand at the very end of the video; As you stated villain was a nit and has no 4x combos given preflop action, weren't you tempted to raise his river overbet? (or double barrell turn and river when checked to)

Jonas Smailys 11 years ago

That's a pretty good point. Honestly, I just missed out on this opportunity completely both in-game and when making this video. Yea I definetely think going for a huge bluff once checked to OTT makes sense with this particular hand. OTR just nah, nit overbetting is not smthing I want to bluff against ever before I really get a good grasp of his game overall.

I would love to see how you would play at NL25 or NL50 where you focus on exploiting the regs bad tendencies

edit: or a moving up series where you focus on explaining what are the main differences between each stake (preferably starting at micros as well :P)

Sorry, but that's really not gonna happen.

1st of all when Im making vids Im not really sacrificing any of my grind time (well, so far). Sure, 100nl is a bit lower but that's deep tables, they're always fun for me :D

2nd to exploit something I first need to know. Last time I played 50NL or lower was in 2012 and even then only <20k hands so Im really not familiar with player pool, wont have hands or anything. To get all the hands it'd take me way too much time.

3rd I dont believe in such thing as differences between stakes. Obviously there's some but it's just because people are better. So simply put the difference between each stakes is that people are getting a bit better in every aspect of the game. I.e. concept of 3betting a lot from blinds vs BTN doesnt just appear out of the blue - it's slowly built while people are moving up.

Lastly, if youre focusing on exploiting regs at <50NL then I think youre doing something wrong. The player pool is way bigger therefore it's way harder to remember each grinder out there and what he's doing wrong. Also there's way more fish so you should be primarily focusing on that. The rake is probably too high as well to worry about table starting HU/3-handed game.

Thanks for the video, Jonas.

Just a suggestion: how about producing a hand history video in the future? As in a video where you pick 4 or 5 hands that help illustrate the importance of a/some particular concept/s. These live session review videos are ok but sometimes it feels like we're going over way too many standard spots and perhaps not delving deep enough into the interesting ones because we're jumping from table to table.

I believe 4 table video would be better in future, cause you could explain hands much better.

I have troubles with OOP play in blinds, both single raised and 3 bet... I would love to see as many material on this theme as possible.

hey jonas/anyone

i'm trying to get my head around the effect of ante's in optimal blind play. well, just the maths behind ante's and how it affects strategies really.

a) is there any advice you can give? or hints on the subject?

b) do you know of any spreadsheet tables or resources with regard to the maths of ante's?

c) i know it creates more dead money in each pot, however you are paying more to play each orbit. what are the implications of this (in general and when it comes to frequencies)?

thanks

Some tips/advice/links about how ante's affect the game structure from a mathematical perspective.

Or do you not consider the ante when making decisions at the table? ie. you're playing the EXACT same way as if these were $0.5/$1 non-ante tables.

Jonas Smailys 11 years ago

I think I covered that for the most part in the videos, maybe part 1.

It's nothing difficult really. All you have to keep in mind is that:

1. Open folding at EP to BTN is no longer 0EV. It's slightly -EV. Basically if an EP open with 67s yields you -10bb/100 then it actually becomes a +EV open because you're already losing ante every single time you fold making it a -20bb/100 hand by open folding.

2. Your pre-flop steal sucess needs to be less frequent to make stealing profitable because of the dead money.

3. Given the dead money on the table when facing an open you can defend wider because you also need to win less frequent.

JohnCarter100 11 years ago

Thanks. That's kind of what I was getting at.

Although I was aware of the play more hands and increased dead money factor, I wasn't thinking about the 1st example you made (where you placed an individual decision (opening 67s UTG) in the context of a 100 (or 1,000,000) hands, which is far different at these tables than it would be in a non-ante game).

I know its already been said but I really wish you would do hand reviews, or play less tables. Hard for you to cover all of your thought process playing this many tables. After all that is what we are paying for.

Jonas Smailys 10 years, 11 months ago

My previous video was hand history reviews so is going to be my next one.

Tbh though I think Im spending about the same time analysing any more interesting spots regardless of the vid's format. It may just seem to me that more explanation is a waste of time - both yours and mine.
