Hey Phil,

1) At 8:48, when u have KQJ4 on 664ss, and u CR, was your plan to fold if jammed on and "call and decide" if he clicks it back? I'm assuming this changes astronomically in mtt/cash.

2) At 21min mark, u have already mentioned the merits of your bluff w/ t847cc on a395cc in that he has a lot of 789 w/ fd, pair and gutshot w fd/, lower 2p with fd/.

Are you looking to bet-big/bluff because  his range primarily doesn't consist of 2-4, and that his range consists primarily of weak 2p hands, or pair +gutshot+fd hands THAT cannot call? Or do you think he is folding a hand like even A5/A9/bottom set?

*Will this be different in a cash game?

Hey Mason,

1) I think that once I x/r, I won't be able to fold the flop regardless of his action.  I said I didn't expect to get stacks in ahead of his range here, which is true, but the downside of the small % of the time he shoves is far outweighed by the upside of when he does something other than 3bet my x/r.

In cash, I would raise almost always of the time and I wouldn't think twice about it, nor would I be sad about getting it in.

2) I'm on the road and my laptop is gonna die before I can load this part of the video.  Get at you soon!

2) Got it to work! ...

Unfortunately I block a fair amount of his draws with my hand.

On the plus side, I've taken a turn line that (especially in a tourney like this) makes my range extremely strong.

I felt that the bigger sizing would make it significantly more likely that he'd fold 2pr/sets... enough to outweigh the fact that I may run into the one card straight and get called.

This was an exploitative play... not a balanced one.

In a cash game, I'm a bit less concerned with vacuum EV.  I like to bet smaller with my entire range there (with the exception of the occasional pot sized bet with 64 and sometimes 44 or 66).  If I bet large like this in a cash game (with my whole range) then I think he can find easy folds with most of the non-straight parts of his range and make too much money against my bluffs by calling with his 1 card straights.

Phil:

I like the plan of not having a 3bet range in order to lower pot size to reduce variance mainly for ICM considerations.  Alternatively could you consider having a smaller, nearly min 3bet size with only our most premium of holdings when in position, and playing with no 3bet range when OOP.  We still keep pots very small, but we allow ourselves to create very profitable +EV spots by often getting pots HU with really strong ranges that can stand a 4bet.  Obviously reopening the betting is counter to what your goal in a no 3bet strategy.

also very interesting to hear your thoughts in this tourney in comparison to this thread you started over a year ago:

http://www.runitonce.com/mtt/theory-variance-vs-style/

I assume that thread was mainly regarding NLHE tourneys, and you made it clear that your variance reduction in this series is a function of the nature of equities in PLO as well as your perceived edge in the field.  Just wanted to say that I found the metagame implications of your tournament approach and thoughts very interesting.

Hey Jim,

I kinda like the idea of a min-3-bet range IP.  We don't have to restrict ourselves to ultra-premiums.  I think our focus should be hands that prefer to be HU and don't mind a 4-bet.  Hands like AAxx and 7654ds, for example.  This also protects us from being 4-bet bluffed since a reasonable amount of our range will be AA.  Perhaps we could throw in some weaker KKxx hands to 3-bet fold, though this seems bad given that we aren't nearly as likely to be squeezed in a tournament

The only issue I see other than reopening the betting is that we weaken our flatting range, which encourages people to squeeze wider.  Even though most of our hands wouldn't mind a squeeze in a cash game, I'd really like to avoid it in tournaments.

Thanks for great questions/comments.

Would the purpose of a min3bet strategy be to dissuade other players from entering the pot because of the perceived threat of a 4bet by the original raiser? I think in a cash game the gains of min3betting would be outweighed by giving the opponent the option to re-raise...an incredibly powerful option if he uses it intelligently. The other issue is that by splitting our range into flat and min3bet, we give away a lot of information about our holding (although it won't be immediately clear to our opponents what we're doing). Still, I think we're selling information about our hand very cheaply.

So good to see a PLO MTT series......got a lot out of it and was surprised to see some of your sort of tight folds pre flop because its so different from your cash play. I always think I "have" to call with good high card value even without much else but I am doing much better now being more selective especially at a very active table. At a certain point you might have to go with your hand so you want to make sure it has nut potential at a full table and/or can stand a raise. Great content, thank you
