Great video Sam.

What I like to do also to calculate my shoving range is to change the calling range of raiser, like on the @13:00 with 66. A lot of people like to open blockers in this scenario, making a huge gap between the opening and calling range, making our shoving range wider.

Thanks for the video! It was a good intro for me to shove/fold spots.

At what stack depth do you switch from mostly raising non all-inn to mostly open shove without much ICM? How much does ICM impact this?

Sam Grafton 8 years, 3 months ago

So this is a BIG question. There is no simple answer. Later position I open shove up to 20bb with a lot of my continuing range. At that stack depth the profitability of open shoving and raise/calling is pretty similar. Other players have a more subtle but highly unbalanced strategy where they raise fold a lot of high card combos and just shove the 'obvious' hands such as mid to low pairs and KQ.

As ICM becomes more of a factor, so open shoving becomes a more appealing option. We have fewer and fewer hands we want to raise call, because being in a flip or even a 55/45 scenario cost us dollars. Having said that, if the table is ripe for exploitation, we could want to do a lot of raise folding. Folding, of course, being the only way you guarantee that you're not all in for your tournament life!!! I see this is a more exploitative approach, but with a lot of work it might be possible to formulate a GTO pre-flop strat.

This only scratches the surface, but it outlines the basic approach I have to these questions. Feel free to probe further.

good to see a video focused on push/fold , push/call, good analysis, thanks Sam

A few comments:
#1 2:50: what are your stats here: VPIP/PFR/3-bet? if so BU has 2% 3-bet and SB never 3-bet shove so far, I'd prefer an exploitative raise-fold for those reasons; also we block Ax increasing our steal success %

#2 8:10 I actually disagree, compare with HRC open-shoving bb/100 with a simple open-raise bb/100 and a open-raise-call bb/100, you'll see i think that A9o generate the most bb/100 as a raise-call. However if there is any ICM consideration it might become an open-shove as we now must call tighter

#1 What you say makes sense. Certainly seems that taking a hand like this towards the bottom of the shoving range and turning it into a raise fold is a logical move. It does depend somewhat on how one constructs one's range. My preference is to take most of the profitable shoves with off-suit combos and construct the raise/call and raise/fold range around suited combos.

#2 Thanks for this. I don't disagree. It may well be a leak of mine to take open shove spots to often. I perhaps project my bb defending strategy on to my opponents and am to wary of the equity the big blind gets to realise when we raise here.

Thanks for these comments. Constructive engagement like this benefits, not just me, but anyone who watches the video.

#1 Why do you take most of the profitable shoves with off-suit combos & construct a raise/call and raise/fold range around suited combos?

very interesting coz I actually do almost the opposite. 2 reasons:
a) most villain's re-shoving ranges are much more weighted towards suited hands instead of offsuit hands; by raising a suited combo (e.g A5ss), there are 3 suited combos of the same hand villain can re-shove. By raising an offsuit combo /e.g A5o); there are only 2 suited combos of the same hand, so we actually decrease the probability of being re-shoved on
b) most suited combos are too good to raise-fold but not good enough really to raise-call, so i preferred open-shoving them, when called we have a small equity boost as we're suited; This is based on analyzing HRC open-shoving bb/100 with an open-raise bb/100 and an open-raise-call bb/100 and see which hands fit best where in our range

#2 Great point Sam, if we have a very solid opponent at shallow stack depth, it will be easy for him to defend & play correctly post-flop. By open-shoving we remove him all his options and take the bb/100 EV

Thanks for the video, Sam!
Although it is always a good reminder, that as mtt players we should be constantly working on the push/fold, raise/call/fold spots to stay sharp, I think it is fairly easy and common for elite subs to run similar hrc calculations on our own.
So speaking for myslef, i find that i can learn more from your videos, where you use and explain piosolver. Perhaps the reason is, that i am much more familiar and experienced with hrc (as it has been around for a long time).
Also, you have some videos, where you pick a specific spot (for eg. checking as pfr, flatting button, specific 3bet pots, etc.). So i would also love to see some similar content to this. Some ideas could be: check raising in bb vs flop cbets, raising in position vs high cbettors, sqeezed pots, etc.

Best of luck for the ton of upcoming series! :)

Thanks for the detailed response. This is exactly the kind of reply that coaches need in order to tailor our content to subscribers needs. You're idea of raising in bb vs flop c-bets seems excellent place to start and maybe follow with some other specific spot videos, oriented around PIO.

Great comment. I'd love to see some analysis about check/raising and raising in position with differents stack sizes too. And talking about squeezes, I'd like to see with this spot playing like 20-45bb and deep stacks!! Thank u

GeorgeS 8 years, 2 months ago

Really enjoy this format and I hope to see others with focus on ICM push / fold spots to see the differences with those for chips (unfortunately I made several mistakes because I have to work on the impact of 'icm on various spots)

Sam Grafton 8 years, 2 months ago

Glad you liked. Certainly with the direction that the Stars schedule is going. Having some turbo videos 'on file' at Run It Once is important. If a suitable final table comes up, I'll certainly try and make a video that deals more with ICM.

PS Sorry for the delay in replying. Been playing in Aussie Millions and not had access to a computer.
