Transition, learning PLO

Currently i am working hard on learning PLO. I really enjoy it, but there is still a long road ahead.

What I have been doing lately to learn PLO.

- Watching PLO video's on RIO :).
- Reviewing every session I play.
- Analyze with PPT
- Post hands that I have played

Although I have been improving overall, I would like to add some focus to my learning process. Which aspect of the game u consider most important to start with ?

- Pre-flop (defending,calling,3bet ranges IP/OOP)
- Postflop (IP/OOP)
- 3bet pots

Somethings to add??

Maybe u guys can share your thoughts on the transition from NLHE to PLO, and how do u guys learn/approach the game?

In PLO lots of spots are close, but ultimately -EV. They add up fast. What often happens is that a marginal preflop decision snowballs into costly errors postflop, and at every step of the way you have this feeling that it's close, and you can always find arguments for continuing deeper into the hand, but when you look at the outcome you realize that you probably should have folded at some point, but you don't really see where the big error was made.

Tight/solid preflop play will eliminate many such spots and cut down on the number of costly postflop mistake you make. You might give up a little theoretical profit, but that's fine if you aren't good enough postflop (yet) to realize this profit anyway.

More specifically, open tight/nutty ranges from EP and don't flat lots of 3-bets OOP. You should open a lot on the BTN, though. Playing like a nit OOP will steer you clear of many difficult postflop decisions where a beginner is likely to screw up. As you get better postflop, loosen up more preflop.

This is low-hanging fruit, and will make your life easy in the initial learning process. Nit away, head high, and you'll keep afloat as you learn the ropes. ;-)

I know that with NLHE u can use your position stats to see, how much money you are making on BTTN/CO/MP/UTG and SB-BB. In PLO the variance is so insane u need like at least 500k hands to get some information out of it. I don't think this can be used.

I think just learning relative hand strengths on certain board textures is the basis for understanding PLO coming from NLHE as there are some key differences.

The variance can be high, but positional stats in HEM will be pretty useful, you can deduce quite a lot of things
in a 20k hand sample if you have enough experience with it.

As for general strategy for applying into games, ZenFish said it pretty well, play solid like 20/16 or sth until you get comfortable with the stuff above.

I would add that you might should notice very big differences in hand strength in HU pots vs multi-way pots. That combined with basic stack to pot ratio concepts can often help to steer towards the right decision in those close spots.
