Suggestions/help

Fairly new to PLO so starting at the bottom.. I understand the bare basics like how the game is played, etc. But I lack other fundamentals I believe, or I feel like I would want a better understanding of the games strategies etc (mainly a nlhe player). There is a nice live game that runs at the poker room next to my place (on top of whatever runs online) that I would love to get in because of the action; however, I want to be a bit more confident in my PLO game before switching from nlhe into that. So I wasn't sure if anyone knew of a good starting point for me? I have watched a bunch of galfond videos and read a few things here or there.

Any help or suggestions much appreciated of videos, articles, books, etc.

Thanks!

Hey Corey - I'd continue to check out Phil's videos even though they might be a few levels beyond where you're at. I've had the luxury of watching Phil play since he began playing PLO a few years ago and talking to him about the game here and there. The biggest mistakes I made early on were probably preflop errors. I was way too loose preflop which puts even the best players in difficult positions later in hands. I also spent some time looking at equities. Run a couple of situations because you could be making decisions where you think you are an equity favorite but are actually a big dog or vice versa.

If your live game plays like some of the low stakes live "fun" PLO games I've played in, I don't think you can go wrong adopting a tight strategy + playing pots in position until you get a feel for the other players tendencies.

Hope this helps and keep us posted on your progress.

Agree with Mikey. Starting out, tight is right. Once you get a feel for the more common/standard spots that arise in PLO you can start loosening up, but one of the biggest mistakes beginners make is thinking that just because equities run close together preflop that gives them license to start playing way too many hands.
Also, 3Betting IP is a very powerful tool. As for live games I'd tighten up my 3Betting range considering that you'll be seeing so many multi-way flops. Live, you'll just want to nut peddle. Over-set, over-full and draw-over-draw them to death. That is where you'll make most of your money in loose/passive games with tons of multi-way pots.

Above posters are right. I would also like to add that you should really put in time studying. Have a pencil and paper infront of you and pause every minute to take notes from videos your watching, especially the ones where they teach the fundamentals. Taking notes while watching videos are so essential for your learning curve. It makes sure it sticks and you should read your notes every day until it sticks.

Thanks guys, and yea I totally agree with you on the note taking during videos Viktor, I do that now already with nlhe videos that I watch orr for replayers I pause before the coach/presenter speaks and I say what I would do in that spot then see what the presenter states about the given spot and compare the differences (helped a ton with my learning curve)
