PLO Tournie vs PLO Cash
Hi Guys,
I was watching jcarvers twitch stream last night and he was playing the $320 WCOOP PLO comp.
I play PLO cash from PLO10 to sometimes PLO25 if I want to take a shot.
What got me thinking is how different are PLO cash games to low / mid stake PLO tournies?
Is there a completely different strategy? Aggression / stack preservation?
Would be good to get some thoughts as I think I throw in a few low stake PLO tournies on my Sunday grind.
Cheers
JP

Tourney's=higher variance, especially in MTT. Try a few out see how you like them, just remember that because of the higher variance you are going to need to be able to win some flips and run good. As the tourney progresses hands start to play themselves as blinds get higher and higher relative to stacks.

Hey,
There are a couple significant differences between cash games and MTT's in general. One is that the value of your chip stack varies through the stages of the tournament. There are a couple models that deal with this, ICM probably being the most popular. The key thing though is that EV can no longer be calculated directly from chip EV, you need to take the tournament payout structure and remaining players into consideration.
Another difference is that in tourneys you end up playing with very varying stack sizes, most of the time much shorter stacks than in cash games. Now, you always need to consider stacks together with your cards (along with position and some other parameters too) when deciding your play, so this isn't strictly a theoretical difference, but in practice you do need to consider much shorter stack situations in MTT's. This requires you to play some hands differently preflop.
A hand like KKT9ss may exemplify this somewhat well. Below a certain stack threshold, I think you always want to 3-bet this hand preflop against just about anyone. Then there will be a range of stack sizes where it's more of a grey zone and may be better to flat (depending on the opener). But when stacks get really deep you may want to get back to 3-betting this hand again.
Hope that helps.
