NLHE player curious about the state of microstakes PLO, getting mixed signals from forums.

I'm a NLHE player, grinded up from 2NL to 30NL, now I'm curious about PLO and thinking about making the switch.

However I get mixed signals about the "state" of microstakes PLO 2NL - 25NL, most post I read claim it's really hard to beat with the high rake, but then every once in a while I see players saying it's very beatable and one can expect a better winrate then microstakes NLHE if you put in the work.

I am fully aware that poker is not a "get rich fast" type gig, since it took me 18 months to get from 2NL to 30NL.
But realistically, what can I expect with PLO if I gave running it up from 2NL a shot?

Its definitely beatable, takes a lot of work to learn PLO in general and dealing with swings can be tough at first but with high volume and squeezing edges that weaker players are giving you, with taking some really exploitable lines vs players who aren't paying much attention (and taking notes of the ones who are) you can grind out winrates. To cut out losses from the start, study the game before playing much. There's a thread somewhere about transitioning to PLO I wrote more indepth in, and if you just sit down at the tables and start playing with a NL mindset you'll get crushed even at the micros. I think a big portion of people who say the micros aren't beatable are transitioning NL players who just give up because they underestimated the game in one or more sense and just blame rake. I was in the same boat, I was down 40BI after about a week transitioning to PLO playing PLO2, I blamed it citing to myself I'd be breaking even if it wasn't for the rake, then I actually began taking it seriously and realised I was a massive fish. If you're willing to do it, its doable :)

Be prepared for tons of variance.....even if you have an edge in the stakes you are playing you'll have massive swings from day to day and week to week. There is so much great material on this site though. Leszek B has some great vids about setting up and using a hud for plo which are extremely helpful. I would study some and play some hands....then repeat

The game is more complicated than NL. This results in more opportunities to blunder. So at first, you will lose a lot, but once you get a graps on things, your winrates can be much higher than in any NLHE game.

Other players are making massive mistakes. They are beatable for quite a lot, but rake may cancel out almost all of it. You'll need to win at something like 20 bb/100 pre rake, and for that you'll need to be fairly sharp.

What are your goals in poker? What do you want to achieve in the long run?

If you enjoy the challenge and the journey of grinding it up from 2 PLO, go for it. I have little doubt a great player can beat those stakes, even with the huge rake. But if your goal is to make money from poker that's applicable to real life, grinding it up from 2 PLO is going to be a very long road indeed.

I actually had a negative learning curve at the beginning. I started playin pl2 only and won almost 50 BI in under 10k hands (rakeback exlcuded), some of which but def. not all can be explained by varaince. I moved up, adapted unconciously and conciously new strategies as I thought they were necessary or bc i was midleaded by some concepts, so I started losing again.

Welcome to the players of plo :) if u have a solid, not too complicated overall game u ll be able to get 5-10bb/100easily if u play ag. Fishes and u table select. Of coirse rake is a consideration thats why its not that profitable to play against 24/15 type players (zoom) so play normal tables and GL :)

Thanks for all the good replies guys.
It was surely much more constructive than all the negative replies on other sites! :)

Might give it a god, starting at reg tables :)

It's more than beatable. I just did a little experiment myself where I started with 10$ and ran it up to ~270$ 4-tabling Zoom. Not a shining example of bankroll management (had to drop to 1 table of PLO2 at one point, and moved up to PLO5 at 50$ and PLO10 at $150) but proves the point.

7.7k hands PLO2, 4.6k hands PLO5, 6.3k hands PLO10
Avarage winrate: 21.5 bb/100, rake: 17.67 bb/100
