Missing EV with overzealous c-bet?

Blinds: $0.50/$1.00 (5 Players) BB: $100.00
UTG: $111.28
CO: $198.48 (Hero)
BN: $28.92
SB: $65.86
I think BB was brand new to the table at the time (and this is from Ignition, so that's zero hands).
Preflop ($1.50) Hero is CO with 8 9 5 A
UTG folds, Hero raises to $3.50, 2 folds, BB calls $2.50
Reasonable if non-mandatory open.
Flop ($7.50) 3 7 8
BB checks, Hero bets $5.50, BB folds

So, it's kind of a simple question I'm bringing to the forums, but it came to mind immediately after BB folded: is this a spot to check back because I have so many good runouts and such strong blockers to villain's continues?

Did I lose out on future bets by taking this pot down immediately, or is my equity precarious enough that betting was optimal?

I may just be being results-oriented, but like I said: when BB folded I really wondered if my bet was the best option.
