Grinding PLO. Zoom or regular?

Hello All!

Quick introduction:
25 yo dude (student) from the Netherlands. I am playing (online) poker somewhere around 8 years now. I played everything from Sit & Go's ($3 to $30) to Cashgames (mostly 10PLO to 100PLO) but as a 'funplayer' i prefer playing MTT's the most in the weekends. In the last few years i have reached some decent final tables in FTOPS, MiniFTOPS, SCOOP and TCOOP events. Unfortunately still waiting for the 'big one'.

Just made an account on RunItOnce.com and planning on becoming a full member, so i have acces to the premium video's. I graduate in january and thinking about giving poker a chance. I am planning to play PLO Cashgames. I have done this before for 2 months, 2 years ago. I started at 10PLO Zoom and quickly moved up to 25PLO Zoom. In two months i played somewhere around 200k hands and had a winrate somewhere around 30-35bb/100 (before rake). I remember the rake was enormous back then on the Zoom tables, but there still was a solid VIP-system. After 2 months i lost motivation because i couldn't play fulltime anymore because of my study, and cashed out a big part of my bankroll and lost the rest playing highstakes MTTs.

I consider myself a winning player, when i play my A-game at least. I guess time will tell. Today i reactivated my HM account and next month i am going to improve my game by studying some serious PLO, also with the help of the vids on this website.

I might post updates on a forum to keep myself motivated. Right now im trying to figure out what is best for me to start at. 10PLO of 25PLO? Regular tables or Zoom tables? I know the rake is higher at the Zoom tables, but so the number of recreational players i guess. Any thoughts anyone?

If you got any other questions or tips, please let me know!

Greetings!

I would recommend to start with regular tables. It will make things easier because you can identify players that never bluff, who is calling stations etc much eaiser. Adjusting to the extreme tendencies you see in micro PLO adds a ton to your win rate. Playing one or two zoom tables while working on preflop can also be a good idea. I think it's a good idea to play the first 5k to 10k hands at the very lowest stake possible and then slowly move your way up to the stake you are ready to deposit bankroll for. Most players will make some massive mistakes in their first 10k hands after a long break that makes it difficult to win much.

At small stakes the rake is high, 15-20bb/100. So to make money you need to have edge bigger than that versus your opponents. To beat the rake, you need to target the opponents you have the biggest edge against. Those are the high VPIP players.

If you check the average VPIP of tables, you will see that in normal tables you can easily find tables that have twice the avg VPIP compared to Zoom. So per hand, you should be making more money in normal tables if you keep yourself in the tables that have high VPIP players.

In Zoom you don't have to table select, so it's a lot easier. And you can get more hands per hour.

So in short: Zoom is easy, but often gives smaller winrate.
