Tournament dilemma versus erratic players and possible mental game issue
i am fortunate enough to play in some reasonable buy in live events with a host of unpredictable, loose erratic players. They will overplay hands, have bet sizing tells and generally be making many mistakes that with patience one would do well versus them
my dilemma is finding a fold when they have me beat. i get get torn between some info suggesting they have me beat and their tendencies to be very sporadic and overplay hands. As a general rule versus these players i must simply widen my value range and stack off, but then either body language, or bet sizing tells or some other piece of info puts a seed of doubt in mind that this time they have it. now i could be on the brink of learning a new skill: (Intangible Competence -> Conceptual Competence) but not know enough about it to use it effectively all the time
since i mostly use a value-oriented approach i usually have premium holdings and i'm wondering if i'm having attachment issues that are preventing me from folding. the main thing that goes inside my head is that versus a different player type i would fold but this erratic player has other random holdings or just does unorthodox things BUT then i have the feeling i'm beat or now my hand is no longer good. that some how 'the turn helped him' or this time he has the higher overpair when you have Queens, but villain has limp shoved A6o and limp reraised KQo.
i call his limp/4bet after i had 3bet an isolation raise and 1/4 and 1/6 flop and turn bet only ofr him to bet half pot OTR- so maybe my river play is poor, board ran out 543 T 9 i felt he easily could have AK that is now trying to pick up the pot.
i isolate pocket Kings versus a player that is calling 96o IP and shoving over a cbet on K9x or calling OOP with 65o and checking call big bets on a flush draw board with his OESD only to underbet his made straight when the flush draw gets there. flop is T85r he checks i cbet he calls turn is a Jack with a flush draw now possible and he overbet shoves into me: my initial thoughts is that it looks alot like pair+draw that won't fold so decides to bet himself. but ofc he can also just have 97 or Q9 or JT or a set that's taking a slightly odd line imo. i have to call 40k to win 60k (20k+40K) its a 2x overbet turn.
.. just reading what i wrote i think there is enough info there for me to find a fold in both spots. during play i called both times with the excuse that they are unorthodox/erratic - am i making up what i what to believe just so that i don't need to fold perhaps?
i'm very tired from the tournament and i just wanted to put in writing what i'm thinking/feeling so that i can delve into it in more depth later when i wake up.
what are your thoughts, what has helped you? where am i going wrong, being illogical etc?
