BB had been known to get out of line a bit and had gotten to showdown with marginal hands in the past (had been seated with him since we were down to 2 tables). Any merit to my small open raise in this spot, or is it better to be just open shoving my whole range?

Cant be results orientated thay was just unlucky. I like a small open raise it induces s.b/b.b to shove worser aces which we have crushed which if we had jammedwould have folded. AK. Open jamming is also fine. Can go either way
