wonky 3bet sizing from regs oop

I'm a simple man. When I 3bet, I slam the pot button. You min raise, I slam pot with my 3bet and now pot is medium size. You pot raise, I slam pot with my 3bet, now pots huge.

However, these nit rakeback grinding regs are doing some kind prehistoric formula of pot + 2 bb oop, or pot - 1 bb in position. Is there any theory backing these kinds of 3bet sizings? If the only reason people do this is because they want more folds when they are out of position and more calls in position, then there is clearly some ways to exploit these sizings.

I would consider both those sizes to be on the bigger end. Pot against a 3BB raise is 10.5BB IP?
Where it generally should be closer to 9BB IP as a standard.

Against bigger 3-bet sizes you just need to defend less often and you want to 4-bet more as a defend instead of calling.

If they are doing it with a similar range than normal, just a bigger sizing, then you would want to just 4-bet bluff more often as they have way too many weak holdings that can't stand that pressure. But in general lower stakes people aren't 3-betting enough, already too value heavy. So the 4-bet bluff strat doesn't work that well in practice vs those tighter ranges.

We are much happier having our 3bet called when we are in position because we can realise our equity much more easily, so the sizing should be smaller. I like to roughly triple the original bet in position, or quadruple out of position.

I still need to play more hands and get more data, but I was looking at 3b pots lately. And from my limited sample and from seeing which hands regs show up with at showdown (and me having called 3bets too lose myself) I am more and more inclined to size up IP to punish those wide callingranges and too small 4bet ranges. So I am tending more and more towards 3.5x IP.

I think that is a fair point, but I do think 3.5 times is a bit too big, we are reasonably happy having our 3b called when we are in position and can control the size of the pot. I usually bet about 0.5bb over triple the original raise in position and 1bb over quadruple out of position.
