Winnings in High Stakes

Hello everyone, I know that most of the players in HS, have a solid game, each day less exploitable, so I want to know how winning players get most of their winnings, given that in those stakes there arent many fishes like in low stakes and midstakes.

I suppose you cant win being a nit, so the key its play exploitative style against each player focusing on his leaks? or play optimally against all the field? And what happens when everybody plays optimal?...

Is there a way to always create an edge? And how?

I play micros, but I want to know how to orientate my progress, and have a perspective of what I ll face if I reach the end of the dream.

I want a lot of players to comment here, help me to solve this queries and start a good discussion :).

I think there is no 'key' to poker success. Poker is so dynamic and complex, and involves so many deep human emotions and competing wills: it cannot be reduced to a system. If it is a system, then the rules are changing every day. It's a fluid system: it can be described, surely, but hardly grasped. Even for great players, the game is filled with illusions (or rather, players fill the game with their own illusions). Everybody has his own illusions, therefore his own weakness, which is why there is obviously people competing for money at high stakes (they believe they can exploit some of their opponents). If you read Galfond's blog, or ask any pro, you'll see they go through different phases, and sometimes they lack confidence to the point they even contemplate quitting. I know no good player that has not experienced doubt, to all the extent you can imagine.

Becoming a great poker player consists in successfully navigating the multitude of illusions provided by the game. The game is never 'solved'.

My piece of advice: give up learning a system, learn the art (of the game). And take a step at a time ;). Being a micro player, you have so much way to go before getting to high stakes. If you want to reach the top of the montain, well, you'll have to walk first XD. That's how you should orientate your progress IMO : if you look too much upwards you'll lose contact with where you are now.

Cheers

The high stakes game only run with a fish at the table, except for when the best regs who think they have an edge over each other play. This starts at 2/4 and 3-6.

Most of them play a GTO style, and only exploit small holes, because nobody has really big leaks at those stakes.
A couple of years ago, player with an explo style ruled (Ziggy, Ivey, Durrr etc.) Today, Isildur is one of the only players left who holds his own at the nosebleeds. He's a special kind of talent though, as he's been able to become worldclass at 4-5 games while starting at the highest stakes, not using a HUD, not watching videos, not discussing strategy or do math simulations.

Because of the limited high stakes action, there are mid stakes players who win as much as high stakes players, just because they put in so much more volume. Randy Lew is a good example.

Pokerstars lost its mind when implementing a Zoom-only 50/100 games, which is the highest stake that ran every single day. I've barely seen any 50/100 running, and most of it was CAP. They will likely change it back, once they realise they're destroying high stakes action.

Viktor Blom has loads of experience though. He was playing poker way before us. And enjoying success at an early age means he can be more reckless. He is able to keep the pressure going over many tables for many hours, its quite a feat! i've been very impressed with his play and history as a poker player.

Why Blom is like rollercoaster, because their style, is it explotaible when he is exploiting others?

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about what "exploitable" means. You are correct when you say that he is exploitable when he is exploiting others, however I expect that he is much better at exploiting his opponents than they are at exploiting him - in other words, he wins the "adjustment war" pretty regularly. But any time anyone plays in an exploit-ative fasion, they become exploit-able too.

This isn't what creates Blom's swings though. Blom's swings come from his mental game imo - even phenomenal players tilt, and most players, even pro's, would vastly increase their win-rates by improving their mental games.

Juan, I'm not sure. It's 2 or 3 for HU Zoom, and I think around 4 at 6-max.
I remember playing a bit of full ring 4-handed when the games started running.

Why do you think Stars are interested in making 50/100 non zoom, assuming you are right and 50/100 action is dead ? They will rake much more by running lower games..

Honestly man the biggest keys are doing the right things away from the tables.  Preparation and concentration are tangible things that separate the good from the great and that anyone can attain.  look at Tiger Woods for example, the guy is always mentally and physically prepared for peak performance.  Poker is no different.  It is obviously easier said than done, but I think the answer becomes obvious.  If you want an edge, do things that your opponents arent doing.  Work out, eat healthy, stay balanced, dont drink and do things that affect your concentration.  And one way to gain a huge edge (especially in higher stakes is to study and data mine your opponent and choose a situation where they are at the tail end of a session, have other tables going, or you know for some reason they arent playing their A game.  One thing to keep in mind is that tomorrow is always another day and you can come back fresher and more prepared than your opponents (who probably have lifestyle leaks)
