When should you get up from the table?
Hi everyone,
I am incredibly new to RIO but I've seen some videos and had a browse through the forums and I think a lot of the content here is very solid.
Background:
I used to play on 888 Poker, Full Tilt and PKR back in the day but I never took poker as seriously as I should have (considering I played 15-20 hours a week). I didnt use a HUD and overall I was a losing player. Took a break from playing poker to start a couple of businesses and now slowly getting back into it. I'm coming in with a mentality of trying to improve my game rather than just trying the same things over and over again and expecting different results. I have started playing poker stars 10 NL zoom and try to build from there.
However, this post is about Live Poker. I live in Melbourne, Australia so I frequent Crown Casino every now and then. I play 1/3 NL with a $200 max buy in. Competition is pretty soft at these tables with majority (80-90%) of them being recreational players. With that said, I have an issue of playing big stack poker.
The last 3 sessions I have gone to play 1/3 at crown, I have built a stack of just over $600 but then it reaches a point where the following things happen:
- The whole table eventually becomes big stacked and I'm worried of committing my stack in on one hand
- I believe that I'm now more focused on reaching an arbitrary stack in my mind (such as $1000) that my standard of play decreases.
- I usually chip off (one was a terrible bad beat) to $200-250, almost back to where I was at the start after 4 hours of play and usually leave because I know that if I keep playing, more often that not, I'm going to stack off the remaining amount within the hour.
A hand that just occurred today:
I got Q2o button, UTG +1 (villan) limps, folds to me and I make it $15.
Folds back to villan and he raises to $40.
At this point, I have been 3 betting a lot of pots and I know that he has picked up on this and he's making a play.
I re-raise to $100, he tanks for 10 seconds and goes all in.
I need to call another $98 to win $$470 or so... I make the call and he wins with A9o.
*Looking back at the hand this is my evaluation - my read was semi correct but the right play would have been to re-raise all in instead of to $100 which would have likely knocked him out of the hand. If you guys think I played it completely off, please let me know - I'm open to suggestions.
So I guess my questions are:
- What is the right time to get up from the table when you're building a bankroll (If there is one)?
- How to play big stack poker? What mistakes do you think I am making?
- Based on the information I've given, what other leaks or problems in the game (theoretical & mental) can you spot and what is the best way to go about fixing them?
Sidenote: I actually don't have the bankroll ($4000) to be playing $200 NL at crown but I play there because competition is very soft.
Thanks in advance,
TutorV
