What is the purpose of raising the button
So, in a live game today, I was thinking about how to construct my range differently in a live game versus online.
When I have two very bad players in the blinds, I am tempted to open wider, things like 62s, 52s, all Jxs, Txs, etc. BUT, I am also raising bigger, often 4x. So that would mean I am risking more to win less, so I should want to play tighter. But the players are weak and don't 3bet light at all. So I want to open wider. You get me?
I feel like part of the reason we raise the button is obviously to win the blinds. It's also to play a pot heads up in position. So, I suppose our size is going to be dependent on the threshold where we most often get one of the two players heads up. As they call less, we reduce our raise size, and can then widen our range. As they call more and give us loads of action, we can take advantage of this by playing tighter. But I guess not, because there are certainly a lot of hands that we would want to raise for a smaller size to play in position against one or two weak players. So maybe the solution isnt necessarily to keep going bigger and bigger, as being able to play postflop is going to be very profitable as well.
It just got me thinking, what am I trying to achieve? I found my self going in mental loops in my head, and decided to write it down and set it aside to ask on here. What I am comfortable with, is playing a similar range to what you may see online, but with some of the fringe hands beings opened basically every time. (63s for 3.3 or 4x). K7o too.
It seems to me, by going too wide, you almost play into a weak loose players strategy. Their strategy is in part bad because they are getting involved with really weak hands out of position, but as we get more involved with ever increasingly weak hands, we kind of make their strategy better(say by opening 72o in an extreme example, now their defend of 82s isn't quite as bad).
