Top pair, Villain jams River with overbet

Hi,

This is my first post on RIO and actually my first hand history post ever. I played this hand recently and hated the way i played it. To be honest, i actually liked the way the villain played it.

MP2: $3.73

CO: $3.86

UTG: $4.14

Hero bets $0.75, UTG+2 calls $0.75

River: ($2.47) 9 (2 players)

Hero checks, UTG+2 bets $4.85, Hero folds

I felt like my range was very transparent when i checked the river (Top pair, high pair, air) and it gave the villain enough room to over-bet with a bluff, flush or set. Looking back maybe i could have played the turn differently. I have a tendency to auto c-bet and i rarely use a check-raise unless it multi-way pot.

I've played about 40K hands at 2NL with a win rate of 11.71BB/100 and this was in my first 300 hands of moving up to 5NL. My goal is to successfully beat the micro stakes at NL and PLO. There is a big jump in quality in players compared to 2NL and i want to make sure I am making the right decisions and improving my thought process with each level I move up.

Anyway, thanks for your time. I'd love to hear some feedback from you guys.

Welcome to the forums :)

I wouldnt even bother cbetting the flop as you just completely missed it. Its fine to just check/giveup with the part of your range that is this weak. His range for calling preflop is pretty strong and he can continue with a ton of hands, and hes got position on your and youve got basically no hope.

As played turn is close, you re basically just value betting/protecting vs 88-JJ (not all of which are calling) but hes gunna have flushes, sets, AQ with a heart, so its meh. Id just bet i guess cuz im not sure what to do, but checking might be the way to go

on river it kinda just depends on what he thinks. Does he want you to fold, or does he think you are bluff catching so he might as well shove? I would assume his range to get to the river is decently strong in that hes not going to have a lot of hands that are just going to be pure bluffs (like say AhJx), and its a lot of hands that have showdown value (a hand like say TT with a heart), so Im inclined to just fold, because hes just going to check back all those TT type hands instead of turning them into a bluff. Also until I see otherwise I typically assume from an unknown that an overbet is the goods cuz that seems to be the case for most people as a default.

easy fold, your range is really clear in villain's eyes.and in micro nl, over bet river or check raise river got nuts usually. You top pair is not good enough here.

Thank you ItsToothPasteISwear & sado44 for your advice!

Next time I'll consider:

-My hand has poor equity on wet boards like this OOP against EP cold caller.

-I should c/f way more than i should cBet on flops like this.

-His range for value betting river (let alone over-betting) is very strong.
