SB 3-bet ranges
Hey guys. Watching some live play videos I realized some pros, like Cameron, are not always playing 3-bet or fold from SB vs MP and EP. Is that standard? Is it less necessary vs these positions because we are less likely to get squeezed light (since MP and EP ranges are strong and BB will have less incentive to squeeze)? I noticed that they basically play a polarized 3-bet strategy vs early position and linear vs late position. Im currently playing 3-bet or fold linear vs all positions

In my opinion it depends on what stakes you're playing at, so for example in Stelios Serefidis' most recent video, he recommends playing 3bet/fold in the SB at 10NL, and I would guess it's probably a good strategy at 25NL and maybe even higher. Having said that, I think it makes more sense to have a polarised 3bet strategy vs EP because their RFI range is smaller, if you don't want to be play 3b/fold. I believe the reason that it is recommended to play 3b/fold at small stakes is because both players will have much wider ranges postflop, and your range might be capped, which could lead to an inexperienced player making more mistakes. If you feel very confident postflop then maybe having a calling range in the sb could be profitable as other players might not play postflop correctly against a preflop caller.
It's not that great to 3bet 100% of the time with ATs, 99 and AKo vs a 15% RFI range. Folding them is not a good option either. The solution is to have a calling range.
Do you not think this is very exploitable? If the BB knows that you have a linear calling range in the SB, you can get squeezed a lot, and you will have a capped range OOP postflop. I'm not necessarily saying I disagree with you, but I think those are the main arguments for not having a linear range to flat in the SB with.
Capped at QQ, AKo and AQs isn't really a problem (I don't think you should flat all of them). BB has almost no FEQ with a squeeze against MP/EP open and SB cold caller.
The cold call range will be really strong as well. Mostly suited BWs, AQo, AKo and most PPs. 22-44 is a little close vs EP and TT/99+ can be 3bet sometimes.
Edit: Ako and Ats are good 3 bets on BB v UTG and 99 is ok. I don't think having cold call range is bringing any significant amounts of EV on sb and people doing it are either extremely good or deluding themselves about profitability of it.
It's really the other way around 99 is a good a 3bet vs UTG and AKo, ATs do OK.
I have done sims for SB linear 3bet vs 15% RFI and if you include 100% AKo it's mostly hoping for preflop folds and without fold equity it might be -EV (i.e. assuming a 9% RFI that never folds). ATs does also have a low EV if you include it at high frequency, but if you include it at low frequency it does reasonably well. 99 has quite high EV, but you have to fold a lot of other PPs if you never flat.
In BB vs 15% open AKo is mostly a flat in simulations.
I agree that there are much easier ways to improve WR, but it makes a lot of sense to have a flatting range against UTG. It's only 3 hands that really benefits from being 3bet and those are AKs, AA and KK.
I like mixing up a little bit between calling and 3betting, i'm not taking always the same line at all.
It depends however on the reads that you have of the villain, stacks, etc
Because of no flop no drop we are highly incetivized to end the hand preflop, especially on low stakes where rake is big and thats why I don't think cold calling from sb is bringing any significant EV.
