I've been using different opening sizes at the Microstakes (Ex. 5NL-25NL), anything from 2.5x-3x and I am wondering what size is a good balanced size? I feel like 3x bloats the pot, but opening 2.5x might cause opponents to open hands they normally wouldn't trying to hit the pot hard. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, it not clear to me when you say you "feel" this or that, what you're basing it on, and why you think that it's bad.
If you have a good hand, you want to "bloat the pot" - namely, play for more money. And if you have a good hand, you want people to put their money in with a weaker range. So neither of these things are bad for you.
As an example: if you raise with AA to 4x and 4 people call you, you are (or should be) happy. You're not going to win the pot every time (maybe 60% or so), but it is an extremely profitable situation on average.
In general, anything from 2x to even 5x can work. 3x is a good default size. If you're at a fishy table where people love to see flops, make it bigger. If there are strong regs in the blinds who 3-bet you, make it 2.5x. If there are short stacks ahead, you typically want to make it smaller (2x or 2.5x), to allow yourself more maneuvering pre and postflop. If you are weaker than the average player at the table (though if you are, why are you playing in the game?), you want to make it bigger and cut down on maneuvering.
Totally agree. I can only add that 3x opening is standard for every position except CO BU SB. Open-raising from that positions are good with 2.4-2.5 size. Your bet-size from other positions must be the same (it can be adjusted to bigger size when you see fish who could pay, as belrio42 said)
GL!
In theory you should raise smaller from EP/MP/CO versus button. You will often be OOP against a strong IP range and be at an equity disadvantage post flop. You want to use smaller sizings to control pot size more effectively when you see a flop and lose the least possible when you face a 3b and fold.
Thats current theory correct, smaller the further we are from button.
fantastadonk U mean "bigger the further we are from the button" ?
yea i heard that kind of theory)
The only position calling is a high frequency play in games with rake is in the BB. The further you're away from BB the higher ratio of VPIPs will come from 3bets compared to calls which makes smaller opening sizes in UTG better than in the SB. However in soft games the opposite is often true but you may have to tighten up considerably with hands that don't play well MW or against tight ranges UTG in those games.
No smaller the further from the button. I believe the goal is to reduce IP 3Bet EV which means if IP doesn't 3bet it's whatever. Check Kalupso answer.
If I remember correctly Snowie opens ~45% 3x otb, vs ~60% 2x otb preferring the 3x option. Changing our raise size changes our range slightly but shouldn't change our winrate too much.
