Range on a monotone board
Hey guys,
Curious on your thoughts on how to play your range in this spot on a monotone board. Below is the hand and my thoughts:
Table Veyron (6 max) - NL Hold'em - $2/$4 Seats: 6
Seat 1: V1 ($573.80)
Seat 2: V2 ($780.55)
Seat 3: HERO ($822.35)
Seat 4: V3 ($757.80)
Seat 5: VILLAIN ($553.75)
Seat 6: V4 ($400)
V3 posts the small blind of $2
HERO posts the big blind of $4
The button is in seat #1
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to HERO [Ah Ac]
V3 folds
VILLAIN raises to $8
V4 folds
V1 folds
V2 folds
HERO raises to $32
VILLAIN calls $24
*** FLOP *** [2d 3d Ad] (Total Pot: $66, 2 Players)
HERO has 15 seconds left to act
HERO bets $44
VILLAIN raises to $132
Most people in todays games are very polarised in this spot, and far too value heavy, something like sets and flushes with the odd bluff. The reason most people are unbalanced towards value on this sort of board is 1) It hits us pretty hard, even harder when we elect to cbet since we may give up no equity hands or pot control marginal hands. 2) People don't like to bluff in big pots with no equity, the only hand with guaranteed equity is the Kd (especially since this is a card Hero can have a reasonable amount in AA/KK/AK combos, more sowhen villain doesn't have it) and since this is either a flush already KQdd/KJdd or part of KdQo it plays better as a call. Therefore, when people raise this board they generally have it. First question, is that a problem? The only way to counter that seems to be to either raise more bluffs, which as i have outlined before, doesnt seem like it works that often unless the Hero is way over cbetting, or to flat your entire range (I think this is the option most people take)
So assuming my ideas are somewhat reasonable and most players in the 2/4 player pool play in a similar fashion when we are faced with a raise here it is mostly going to be a set or a flush. So how do we continue? Not specifically with AA, but with our range of hands for example AhKd, KhKd and AQhh. My general thoughts are that since out opponents range is so polarised in this spot, we are forced to flat hands like AhKd, KhKd and therefore we should flat our hands like AA and the flushes that we do have. AQhh seems like an annoying fold since we have basically 0% equity vs an opponent with the tendencies I have assumed.
The downside to flatting hands like flushes (we actually don't have many here do we?) and AA are that we can potentially lose value vs 22/33/A2s/A3s type hands on bad turns. We are out of position and if villain does merge raise a hand like KdQo and checks back the turn he is playing pretty well vs our perceived range.
Sorry this sounds a bit jumbled, it is probably because I am having conflicting opinions on how to play this spot and and switching between the 2 strategies. I have also made some pretty large assumptions about both players ranges so please correct them if you think they are incorrect, I believe both the Hero's 3bet range and villains defending range will vary a lot from player to player. I'm looking for more general ideas about how to play this spot.
Thanks a lot!
