Out Played
I have noticed this “new” line, coming from a lot of quarters, in the last week. It’s almost as if, wherever it is that “old man coffee” congregates, they all got together and decided to show the young whippersnappers a thing or two. Surprise. Surprise, It’s a slow play. But particularly confounding. I have seen variations of this exact play maybe ten times in three days. The hand below is the second hand in a week where I have been ensnared, this time for all my chips. Given the line, I never put V on two Kings. To my shame. Be advised.
Online .02/.05 5NL
Hero (SB): 137.8 bb AdAc
BB: 30 bb
UTG: 168.8 bb
MP: 120 bb
Villain CO: 144.2 bb
BTN: 69 bb
PreFlop: folds to Villain CO who raises to 3 bb, folds to Hero SB who raises to 9 bb, folds to Villain CO who calls 6 bb
Flop (19 bb, 2 players): Ks 5h 3s
Hero bets 6 bb, Villain CO calls 6 bb
Turn (31 bb, 2 players) 9d
Hero checks, Villain CO bets 29.6 bb, Hero raises to 122.8 BB and is all-in, CO calls 93.2 bb
River 276.6 bb, 2 players) 2h
Villain CO shows Kh Kc (Three of a Kind, Kings)
Villain CO wins 262.8 bb

Hey, first of all he only outplayed himself and got lucky.
My recommendations would be sizing up pre-flop, when OOP you'll want to make 3bets bigger, I normally go 4x, sometimes bigger. The higher SPR the more equity the IP player can take by leveraging position.
Flop is good, you can have a only c-bet 1 small sizing strategy on that board and it will be very effective but if you want to implement other sizings AA goes into the bigger ones, unblocking Kx and blocking a decent ammount of hands that are happy to float vs smaller sizing by taking 2 aces of the deck.
I'd also bet turn there, we beat almost everything and we deny equity to flushdraws and gutshots. Once check and face a bet I'm shoving it yeah.
Overall just a cooler :/
Yes. Thank you. I thought of that after the fact. I usually do size bigger OOP. Maybe I out played myself a little, trying not to look as strong as I was.
I agree with Mudkip on all points. We're just losing our stack here. GG to him.
Some more details about the sizing up preflop: The positional advantage is mainly equity realization. As Stack to Pot Ratio (SPR) decreases that advantage also decreases. Because of this our 3bets out of position are a bigger size than our 3bets in position.
Xing Yang has a solid video about which sizing is the better one. If we go too small IP gets to call a lot and realize too much equity. If we go too big we just isolate against too strong of a range.
He came to the conclusion that 5x is the best size. This is for BB. For SB there's 2 people behind to act. And raising 5x becomes less appealing then. It might just be an extra 4% of BB's cold 4bet range but it's enough to drive our 3bet sizing down.
General rule: SB 4x, BB 5x.
Thanks. That is extremely helpful.
Make sure you note it in whatever software you use for HUD or whatever (assuming you are on a site that allows that). Nits who do this normally don't change it up so you can know in the future what this line means from this guy.
Anonymous site unfortunately, But great suggestion.
Seems ok but prefer bet/calling turn with FD present.
I wouldn't spend much time at all on this spot since it is not easy to screw up. We either bet/call or XRAI. I think betting is better since his range "should" be wider and have more Kx than just slow played AK/KQ. He will have KJs/A5ss/A9ss/Axss. Not a disaster to give a free card to that range but we can't pay off if we play it passively and let them catch up.
Seems like an easier heuristic to play this as X on rainbow boards and play it aggressively on two tone boards.
Yes, I totally agree. I wasn't worried about my play as much as wanting to highlight this recent frequency jump of Villains taking this exact line, wondering if anyone else playing low stakes had noticed this trend. Might just be coincidence, but I have seen it around ten times in just the last few days. I randomize AA to protect my checking range, but you make a good point. On this flop, checking AA would be closer to 10% than 25%, but I rolled a 4. I am happy with the way it turned out, however, getting stacks in, in any case.
