NL500 live: spot with a player all-in
Hey guys, here's a hand I played a few days ago in the north of France, that I think is not often studied, yet happens from time to time (more in tournaments than cash).
We are shorthanded @ 5/5, 5 or 6 players. Everybody is terrible but me. My image is very solid from 9-10 handed play, where I really focused on staying in control and value-oriented despite being well above the table skill-wise (working on being solid for the long run ;)). But people have quickly realized that I was good, so they seem to expect moves from me, and light opens / plays.
Anyway, I open to 25€ from MP with Ah8h, CO calls with roughly 800€ (I cover). All fold to BB who shoves for 170€. I elect to call, which is marginal, but vilain is the kind of guy not afraid to gamble (my opinion is that he shoves all pairs here, many many Ax, and probably many good broadways or suited connectors, although he'll call them sometimes... but at that time, I felt he wanted to put the money in light and try to take the money in the middle). I decided the marginal gamble was good for me too strategy-wise (by that I mean the other stacks at the table, it's not bad for me to bust the short stack or double him), and my hand good enough, so I called. CO calls as well.
Flop comes 9h Td 6d. Vilain CO is bad, when he sat down on my left I felt he was ready to spazz a lot, but he actually played a mix of gambly play and bad conservative play (like folding a decent hand face up on the turn, and vilain shows an obvious bluff). I considered betting this flop to get heads up versus the all-in player, but I think it's not a great option considering the board texture, because so many hands have good equity here.
Versus given vilain, I think he'll auto-bet most times he has a pair that hits the board (maybe not underpairs), and he'll also 'bluff' stupidly instead of taking the free card, so I'm better off having a strategy of check-folding or check-shoving with my range I think. With my hand, check-fold or check-shove will depend a lot on live reads (something I'm pretty good at).
He checks back.
Turn Tc.
Now, I think there is way more merit to bet to protect our hand and deny vilain's equity in the pot (so that we increase our overall equity in the pot versus the all-in player), especially since CO gave us the info he didn't have a pair 90% of the time. So, in your opinions, should we bet this turn, and if so, which sizing?
I chose to bet 135 into 510.
