Hi all,

Would anyone be able to review the line I took in this hand? I played myself into some trouble and in the end was priced in to make the call, but I'm not sure if my line is correct.

I call the flop with the NFD, although the sizing is large, I think I have good implied odds. Should this be a fold, call or raise?

On the turn he checks which makes me weight his range more towards hands like AJ+ or KQs, rather than large pocket pairs like JJ+ which I think would be firing a second barrel for protection against the flush draw. I think it makes a lot of sense for overcard hands like AJo, KQs to cbet the flop after 3betting pre on this board to try and leverage fold equity from their preflop aggression. It's a dry two-tone board and I THINK (?) villain will get folds quite often here.

So once he does check on the turn I'm putting him on these AJ+, KQs type hands, and I'm betting as a semi-bluff for my flush draw since I have no SDV at the moment. Hoping to get a fold. I get raised by what looks like JJ+ but at this point I am priced in to call.

Was my line reasonable? Was there anything I should have done differently, or any flaws in my hand reading?

Thanks in advance

Just looking at the numbers quickly it does not look like you are actually priced in to the call. You're calling $2.43 to get a potential $5.25 which is pretty much 2:1 meaning you need to be good 33% but only have about 25% against JJ+ here and even less to TT+. You block the nut draw so it's very unlikely villain is doing this with a draw allowing you to call lighter.

I think I'm getting 3.16:1 (24%) here (2.45 turn pot + 1.40 hero bet + [1.40 + 2.43] villain raise) so 7.68 in the pot and I need to call for 2.43

3 questions:

  1. What is villain checking OTT instead of doube barreling?
  2. How would you have played when Villain did bet the turn?
  3. Why are you betting the turn and what do you want him to fold?

  1. I think villain is checking all his overcards like AQ, AJs, KQs, that he did not hit but he decided to cbet flop and take down the pot with.

  2. Depends on sizing but personally I would call a bet of up to around 70% pot, because although I am not priced in for hitting the flush, I think I have good implied odds given villain's 3bet pre + double barrel range (would be putting him on JJ+). I think it would be very likely that he will either fire a third barrel on the river with his overpairs, or would check-call, in other words I am expecting to get paid if I do hit my flush

  3. I want him to fold the overcard hands I mentioned in your first question, but now I am starting to see your point.. do I really want these hands to fold? I am a bit confused because I have no showdown value and I can't call a river bet if he decides to stab again with these types of hands, even if my A5 is good against his KQ. Basically I am worried about missing the flush draw and facing a stab bet on the river. So my strategy is to semi-bluff flush draws and pick up some fold equity along the way, as well as hit the flush sometimes. I think him checking the turn shows weakness so I go for it

Is it ok to fold to the A5s facing the 3bet of OOP Pre? I am often faced with this in 5nl and though A5s is strong, is it bottom of the range of hands when SB is 3bet OOP? I am not sure but i would think the SB is pretty strong with JJ+, maybe AQs+, i am thinking KQs is a bit of a stretch for it being a 3bet range SB OOP to begin the flop on.
