Check flop, see what they are doing on the turn (sizings) and go from there.
Betting turn as played super thin and not good
Flop: why do you think cbetting is good here? I am not saying it is bad to cbet here, but just saying 'I think X is the right play' will not help you. I will say if you are going to cbet here, I would not cbet this large in general as the 5NL population struggles to defend properly against small cbets.
Turn: this is a bad turn to barrel w/ this hand. Villain is likely a fish and will probably call w/ the same amount of 3x that we have preflop, but they got to filter their range on the flop. We are betting at a rather high frequency on this flop, so we get here with a lot of air. Villains check is procedural and should not be looked at as some sort of range capping move that gives us a license to bet weak SDV hands with poor equity like this one.
River: don't rule out calling here, but if I were to do so I probably wouldn't do it with 77. 55 I think is a call here because villain likely isn't doing this with a J, so blocking the straights is probably important
I'm working at my cbet game, and I'm not going to lie, I'm struggling.
So, from my notes on cbetting:
Dry boards: Barrel wide, size small.
Low card boards: Cbet more. We want to deny equity. size bigger
Possibly best (marginal made) hands that can use protection: bet small
So the sizing is confusing but I chose to go 2/3 to deny equity from Q,K,A
What do you think?
You have to up your standards for c betting in multiway pots. Your equity share is diminished substantially due to the extra player. While I can see taking a stab here heads up (my pools c bet success on J high rainbow boards is 41%), I think checking flop is much better here Multiway. Imagine you have clairvoyance and you know one of them has Jx or a passively played overpair. The play would be to check and look to spike a 7. This disconnected board texture will never complete a draw for them so a 7 turn is an almost for sure winner.
A good way to visualize this is to plug that board into something like Equilab and simply give one of them a pair like 9's and the other Jx. Look at the equity difference between a holding like 77 and something like A3. You will start to see that while 77 has better "absolute" strength than A3, A3 is going to be far superior from an equity stand point. You have 5 outs to improve (3 A's and 2 3's) where you only have 2 outs with 77.
