The only 3x hands I can think of are A3cc/A3dd, and I would think 88 doesn't play this way that often.

He could be value owning himself by making a dumb play with 99+ often here I think, as I see some bad players do this from time to time.

His bet sizing is pretty scary though. And given that I block some of his FD's with the Ks, it makes it a bit more worrying that I'm beat.

Still, other than 8's full, quads, and Aces, this is obviously the next best hand in my range, and vs. 1/2 river bet it feels very tempting to call.
