NL100 Moving Up - Shot Taking Tips?

In the past month or so I've taken two shots at NL100 and both failed miserably, with me ending up down 4.5 BI the first time and down 7 BI the second.

I'm probably going to try taking another shot this weekend when the games are good.

Any tips you guys can share that help you get over being nervous playing at a higher limit?

I thought about recording a video of myself playing, but I'm a bit concerned it might make me self conscious and unable to play well.

It all depends on your threshold. For me personally, I've made numerous gains on my bankroll multiple times taking shots only to lose it back. I'd say risk no more than 5% of your bankroll max. Keep your sessions short and focused to build confidence. It's the same game just with players that MIGHT be better. It really sounds like it's the dollar amount that's bothering you so I'd probably take about half the bankroll risk you are taking currently.

Yeah the dollar amount does sting, especially if you manage to build up a decent stack and lose it. It's even more tilting. I will have to be more objective in my thought process and view things as BB's rather than $$'s.

My first tip would be quit before you are stuck 4.5 BI this time ha :) but seriously I think 3 is a reasonable number, that's still a fair bit of grinding back at nl50, but not too little so as you need to quit after being coolered once.

I just play quite nitty when I move up untill I get a feel for how people are playing. But mainly just obvious stuff like get involved in pots with the clear fish and avoid thin spots with the regs. It doesn't matter if you are only playing 18/16 4%3b for example it will be a small sample so they won't adjust to it too much.

I definitely play different when I record so agree that might not be a good idea.

The best thing that calms your nerves will be experience I think, so just getting in volume when the games are good seems like a good idea.

play fewer tables and focus more. Dont try and be more aggresive than normal because you think the regs are playing back more or trying to take shots at you. Focus on EV, and dont start calling stuff you shouldnt because the allure of winning a monetarily much bigger pot than you are used to overrides your logic center. Try not to get passive because you are scared to risk more money or because you dont want to get down, so you start calling PF instead of 3 betting, or call flop instead of c/r, etc.

Everyone is different tho, and so what I would do is go over those previous shots you took and see what things are you doing differently than normal, then write down some key thoughts you want to stay focused on during the session (for example "They arent trying to always make a move on me!") and write them down on some post it notes and stick it to the corner of your monitor for the session

That pretty much summed up my last 2 shots LOL. I thought I was being outplayed so I would call down lighter only to be shown the nuts every time. Majority of hands I lost were from getting value towned by other regs.

I will be dropping down at least 1 if not 2 of my tables (Rush Poker).

I also like okaygo's idea of nitting it up, at least for the first bit until my HEM database starts to build up some stats on some players.

yeah I suffer from the same problem when I move up. I start to fret that im folding too much and that im jsut getting run over, so then I hero call down some hand I shouldnt in a bad spot. I think nitting up some will help to, as youll be playing tighter ranges so youll be in less spots where you are bluff catching.

It also helps me to really just think that the value of my decisions isnt in the dollar amounts im betting and folding for, its actually most of the time just a couple bbs. And that if im making a mistake by folding, im really only costing myself at most a couple bbs in missed EV.

Also, don't be in a rush to move up. Professional No Limit Hold'em Volume 1 recommends 100 buy ins for your limit. If you fall below that, move down. I think if you follow this advice you might not feel the "sting" you mentioned. Personally, I like around 50 buy ins for whatever stake I'm playing.

Good luck.

Just don`t be afraid of other regs, play your normal game and you`ll adjust quick.

Maybe play a little bit of a less variance style untill you grind up a few buy ins and get better reads.
