NL 100 River Hero Call

Blinds: $0.50/$1.00 (6 Players) BN: $131.94
SB: $111.89 (Hero)
BB: $123.61
UTG: $199.59
MP: $113.17
CO: $100.00
Villain has fairly reasonable stats running 22/17 and opens 43% from the button and then folding to 3bet 54% of the time.
Preflop ($1.50) Hero is SB with 9 8
3 folds, BN raises to $2.50, Hero raises to $9.00, BB folds, BN calls $6.50
Pre I normally mix up folding calling and raising from this spot but opted to raise here as BB was quite squeeze happy.
Flop ($19.00) 3 8 T
Hero bets $9.07, BN calls $9.07
On the flop I cbet mainly for protection though I think I could be checking here sometimes as well.
Turn ($37.14) 3 8 T J
Hero checks, BN bets $18.50, Hero calls $18.50
On the turn I think I made a mistake and I should have just bet again to fold out better hands and I think the additional fold equity makes it more profitable than check calling.
River ($74.14) 3 8 T J 5
Hero checks, BN bets $95.37 and is all in, Hero calls $75.32 and is all in
On the river I felt he would be fairly polarised as he would be checking back a lot of tx and other pairs and possibly even some weaker Jx hands. He still has a lot of heart combos and straight draws none of which we block so I felt it was a decent spot to call down. This was mainly based on assumptions of how he would play different parts of his range if we are calling here with 8x then we are calling down with a lot of combos. On the whole do you think this is a reasonable spot to call down and what do you think of my play on earlier streets?
Final Pot BN lost and shows high card Ace.
SB wins and shows a pair of Eights.
SB wins $221.98
Rake is $2.80
