what's the strategy behind 4betting here? Is it just simple math showing this to be +ev vs their range?

Can't say for sure why but some reason would be that he knows SB is 3betting extremely wide.

Say he's 3betting something like this 22+, A2s+, K9s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T9s, 98s, 87s, ATo+, KJo+, QJo (19.5%) of hands, but he only calls with something like this 22+, ATs+, KQs, AJo+ (10%). In this case he would pick up the ~840 dead money about 50% of the time, and with these ranges KTs has about 40% equity when called. Keep in mind these ranges are just made up examples and I don't have time to go through all the math. I purposely used a 3B range of about 2x as many combos as his calling range to simplify things. But if this example was true, especially with that antes and the large 4x 3B sizing there is quite a bit of dead $ in the pot.

Now you could play with these #s if SB doesn't call it off this wide your equity with KTs goes down but you will pick up the dead $ more often so it could still be profitable.

I'm assuming he's just 3betting super wide and or not calling the shove wide enough. Certainly this is a fine combo to flat as well, maybe it was just a misclick we can't really know for sure.
