Huge leak - what now...
Hey guys
This is a bit emberrasing, but sharing might help. This is my first post here.
A while ago i build up a small roll playing micro sngs and mtts. I have always found poker fun and challenging, and as i have other jobs i figured I would switch to cash games. The sessions being easier to fit in my ever changing schedule. My goal is to be a good amateur and beat the small stakes games.
So I was rolled for 10nl and bought the FTGU course. Great content and I also have the grinders manual.
But I studied to little and played to much. Even though I have learned a lot from the course, all of it is not engrained in my way of thinking and playing. I play good sessions and I play horrible sessions.
And probably underestimate the importance a studying and implementing the new stuff. Naturally that leads to losing.
I would be beating 10nl slightly, if it was not for this BIG leak.
So here it is:
I call in big pots on the river(mostly) when Villain shoves or bets big. And they have it. Over 90% in these spots they hold the nuts or something that beats me.
I dont know whether to laugh or cry about it, I am a fairly smart guy, but this habit is SO hard for me to change.
So what now? I will study/play 50/50. Or maybe return to mostly studying for a while. To develop my game and get the basics down.
But how do I fix my huge leak? Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Best
M

Slow down your play.
The calling has become a habit. You do it on autopilot. What you need to do is inject active thinking in your game. You do this mainly by slowing yourself down. And you'll need to do this until you stop calling these spots on autopilot.
trust your intuition a lot more
I think simply committing to just studying more won't do the trick. There is a difference between knowing something and implementing something. I had the same with not being aggresive enough with some bluffs, I kept on studying how to bluff but it took me months to realize that I simply need to "pull the trigger". Like, also the theoretical knowledge wasn't enough to really do it.
Have a look at purposeful practice approaches. There is a good poker book on that, but I'm sure there is also plenty free stuff of a more general nature.
Next time you have similiar decions - write your thougths. Or right after the hand: write reasons why you folded/called ?
After the sessions come back to text Read everything out loud and ask yourself did I do right decions? If your descions was good, thats great. Can congratualte on playing good poker, if bad then figure out what you can do better.
Thank you guys for the very useful comments. I will start to use your ideas right away.
If others have experiences in this area, feel free to share.
Guys posted really good advice.. I mean, everyone is different, so I think you are just better off experimenting now, what resonates with you the most, stick with that and see what happens..
My two golden nuggets would be:
While playing try to talk why you are doing what u are doing (loudly) as if you were about to learn someone (such as some coaching ssn). You might start to notice that your big river calls and your reasoning is sort of silly, you might even record your ssn, to see what exactly you have said..I think it might help you to get to the root of the problem, so you can make more of a macro change then...
Watch Nick Howard free YouTube content... he is so big on river calling efficiency, had multiple videos where his students were just calling too many rivers and he goes really deep in his videos (Btw he was also an Elite coach here..)
Cool. Thanks and will do!
When u see one of these spots coming up, take your hand off the mouse so you can't spazz.
You will build the discipline with experience.
Thanks!
