Checking trips on the river. Good idea?

Blinds: $0.25/$0.50 (4 Players) CO: $9.50
BN: $10.42
SB: $72.57 (Hero)
BB: $97.28
BB is TAG reg.
Preflop ($0.75) Hero is SB with T K
2 folds, Hero raises to $1.25, BB calls $0.75
Flop ($2.50) K K A
Hero bets $1.08, BB calls $1.08
Good flop for my range. Sized up a little bit because we're deep.
Turn ($4.66) K K A 7
Hero bets $3.97, BB calls $3.97
Bet big to get value. Might want to overbet here, but I'm not really comfortable with overbetting yet.
River ($12.60) K K A 7 6
Hero checks
I would generally value-bet trips. But while in the hand, I was struck with this thought.

We're deep, so there's some merit in deception. I should check at least some trips on the river. My hand is nice because it is one of my worst trips, and it does not block diamonds.

So I decided to check. Good idea?

I don't love it vs a TAG, as I would expect he has more Ax or PP hands with SD value than diamonds once he calls the turn barrel. I would just bet 2/3 pot. I think more hands in his range call than missed draws bluff. You also are BvB, so the chance you get called lighter is high. You also need enough strong value hands in your betting range on the river here for the times you get to the river with diamonds yourself and want to bluff. I like the idea of having a bluff catcher on the river, but you probably shouldn't have any hands that double barrel and give up anyway, so it's not really an issue.

Hands that villain would value bet when checked to will call your river bet anyway, and hands that bluff when checked to have no shown down value, so you don't need such a strong hand as a bluff catcher.

Agree Ax type of hands are the most logical hands for the villain and those will pay off on the river most of the time against a reasonable bet. Would not give up potential value to catch a potential bluff in this situation. One could use a worse hands as a bluff catchers A2-A5 without diamonds.

cg15254 I definitely have hands that double barrel and give up. If I'm bluffing river with all hands I bluff with on the turn, I'm probably bluffing too much. I usually aim to give up with somewhere from a third to a half of my bluffs.

For instance, I would bluff turn with something like Qd8d, but give up on the river because it blocks flush draws and straight draws, and doesn't block many good Kx and good Ax hands.

What hands do you check the turn with? KT seems like a decent hand to put in that range, no?

What's the reason behind check KT there? Especially at NL50 where the pool is largely imbalanced?

Zeneka 6 years ago

Yeah I do not play in these pools so I dunno. But it surely depends on how they are impalanced right?
Anyway, I assume we want to have a check range on the turn and if we only check Ax an no Kx we will have a tough time imo. So at some point some K need to be checked, I dunno if it is with T or if we want to go lower (how wide are we opening SB?). I think this T is decent for blocking some outs for the freecard we offer QJ and at the same time we do not block flushdraws. A bit tired now so I dunno but feel free to bash that :)

If you think you never get raised by worse here and you never think he never bluffs his missed draws/paired aces here (happens quite often), I like a blocker bet about 30% pot or so.

I think you can check here too and I think checking probably will net the most vs. reasonably aggressive/competent players. At a stationy table, I bet here always knowing I am folding most often when raised and trying to eke out value from calls.

Like the idea of a small bet on the river also.
Would call it a thin value bet :) as you want calls of Ax hands that not bluff themselves on this board.

In this spot I would look at 'stab river vs missed cbet' and go from there.
You probably have a somewhat low sample size so you can look at 'stab vs missed cbet' in general.

It really depends whether villain is capable of bluffing on this texture... basically, if he never bluffs, you are better off bet yourself and hope to get called
