When and how often do you continuation bet?

I think you need to work on understanding hand ranges and how they connect to various board textures. There is no simple answer to that question.

Some things to consider: your hand strength right now vs your possible hand strength by the river (made hands vs draws); your opponents likely hand strength right now vs their possible hand strength by the river; the preflorp action (did someone call your open, or did they open limp and just call your raise, or did someone 3-bet, etc); how many opponents saw the flop; how tight or loose are your opponents; do you have position; what limit are you playing...etc.

Different strategies for c-betting: you can only c-bet when you have a strong hand, but you probably won't get a lot of action; you can add in strong draws to c-bet (oesd/flush draws), which will widen your c-betting range; you can add in weaker draws (backdoor), which will widen your c-bet range; you can c-bet boards that are good for your range and bad for our opponents range, regardless of what two cards you hold in your hand...etc.
