Basic Question: EV fold preflop on 6-max

Just a basic question: The overall EV of a fold PREFLOP on 6max must be higher than -1.5bb/100 right?
rather about -2.5bb/100? anyone with a solid number?

If you fold every hand you will loose 1.5 BB every 6 hands so that is way more then 1.5BB / 100 hands.

Has nothing to do with EV though.

Not really one can only say the average of folding all the time will net you -1.5 bb/6 and come to think of it that isn't even true as sometimes you will pick up the blinds anyway as everyone folds to you.

If you fold only in EP then thats 0 bb/hand as you did not invest anything.

But why this question?

Im just asking, sometimes a defend (call/3bet) preflop can be minus ev, but still better than a fold

It depends on what you mean with "minus EV". If you bet 3bb, get raised and then fold - what's your EV? You can say "my EV is -3bb" or you can say "my EV is 0bb".

Both is technically correct - although common definition is to base EV on the current decision - which means, it always start with zero-baseline, meaning - what is the difference in my stack when I a) fold (= 0, my stack will be exactly what it is when I am put to the decision) or b) do sth. else.

By that definition a -EV decision can NEVER be better than a fold.

If you say, folding means an "overall" EV of -3bb, then yes, a -2bb decision would be better than folding. But again - that means fold = 0bb, alternative = +1bb.

I'd strongly suggest to adapt that definion, it makes life easier for you. :)

PS: Second time I got overtaken - I'm typing too slowly. :D

The way to think about the blinds is that they belong to the pot (in addition to giving the players in the blinds a discount to call).

You own the pot as much as everyone else does. So, if your hand performs better than -25bb/100, you should be involved in the pot.

An easier way to see this conclusion is to consider antes. With antes, nobody gets a discount, but everyone plays a little looser.

Of course, this is all only theoretical. It's very hard to figure out what your hand is worth. Not least because any hand you play will affect the EV of your entire range.

ok thanks for the intel guys.

yeah maybe im getting too involved in a concept.

but if i only look at BB defences for example, any action that over longterm gives me more than -100bb/100 is better than a fold right?
