[50NL 6max] Common Turn Spot in 3B Pot

Blinds: $0.25/$0.50 (6 Players) BN: $38.62
SB: $60.82 (Hero)
BB: $50.00
UTG: $120.58
MP: $65.77
CO: $52.15
Preflop ($0.75) Hero is SB with A Q
3 folds, BN raises to $1.50, Hero raises to $4.50, BB folds, BN calls $3.00
Flop ($9.50) 5 2 9
Hero bets $3.42, BN calls $3.42
Turn ($16.34) 5 2 9 6
Hero

Villain is playing on the nittier side over 132 hands running at 18/13. Stealing on the BTN 25%.

Effective stack on turn is ~$30 and there's ~15 in pot.

For some reason I find this spot uncomfortable. Is b/c'ing better than c/shipping here? I can see merits to both plays. Which do you prefer and why?

3 bet bigger preflop even though the button is slightly short. You're going to have basically no fold equity on that 3 bet and you're hand is good but it's not a hand as strong as aces or anything close to that. On the turn, hero bets $9 or so. I think that if you check and he bets that you'll rarely get a fold when you jam.

I sized it down due to his stack size, generally I'd make 3bb-->10bb there. But I think you're right in that it may decrease our FE and a larger size will be better due to that.

In terms of your question of bet/calling vs. check/raising the turn...I think I prefer a check raise...

Without having run any exact math on the spot, given the SPR, I just don't think we are in good enough shape to want to bet / call off here.

When you consider all the hands that he would not raise the flop with, but then raise turn here with, I think we will find that our A and Q outs may not be all that live...and we can probably discount about one heart from our outs, on average, in that scenario as well.

I prefer to let my opponent take some stabs on the turn, and allow for a spot where I may actually have some fold equity still.

So I generally prefer a check / raise, but it is definitely largely dependent on his turn tendencies.

really tricky spot, which comes up rather often and i hate as well.
having a fd in a 3bet pot with low SPR on the turn. one of the most difficult ones to play imo.

Hey BubbleNedRum I decided to run the spot through PIO because I was curious myself. I changed the inputs slightly to make the stacks 100bb, because that's when the situation is most likely to occur in the future, and made the 3 bet sizing slightly bigger due to the increased stack sizes.

On the flop, we're basically mixing between checking and betting with a preference for betting small (33%) when holding the Ah.

Once we get to the turn, we're checking most of our range on the 6h and AQ is basically a pure check.

If we face a small bet (33%) we're going to almost always be calling with our hand.

And we're playing it basically the same way, by calling, facing a bigger turn bet (75%).

great stuff once again!
checking a lot on the turn makes sense, PIO is just in love with equity realization i guess.
but i am slighlty surprised, how "small" our x/r range is on the turn, even though we have a lot of strong holdings which would be interested in raising for value and to deny equity. f.e all the overpairs and small flushes.

We're still check raising between 14% and 18% on the turn it looks like... All of the red in the last two images is raising.
