What do you guys think of this move in a Donkament?
This is one of the local WPT League games (no buy-in, playing for points to enter into a national tournament with cash prizes) that I play in just for fun. It's a very recreational game, and generally we're all friends there. So I showed up late and the rule for late reg is you have 2 BB taken from your stack at whatever the level is (starting with a 50 BB stack). I come in at 200/400, and get a starting stack of 9200, sit down and play my first hand sitting in the BB and get dealt JJ. There is one known tight player with a massive stack on the other side of the table, and a couple shorter stacks near me (within 2 seats on either side).
4 limps, SB (villain - short stack) completes.
So I have the best hand at the table right now, a lot of these players like to limp but no one here is limping QQ+. With 2400 in the pot already, any raise I make will leave me pot committed on the flop. Also, I know these people and it is so very easy to get just a strong of calls when trying to iso raise. One guy calls thinking that others will fold and everyone else says "HEY POT ODDS" and they all call. So right now I'm thinking either check and play the hand 6 ways to the flop, as will happen around 60% of the time when I raise, or shove now and have everyone fold almost always. I didn't have time to do the math on it (win 2400 around 90% of the time, maybe more or win considerably more a considerably less amount of the time, and also risk losing some myself. Lots of hands that people like to limp with are hands that tend to not play well multiway, which makes the whole situation kind of entertaining. I'm sure there are plenty of ace highs around and probably near the end of the limping train, a few very wide ranges.
As I'm sure you have guessed, I take the option to check, I'm also better than most of the people there and am totally comfortable playing against these guys post (although there are 2 people at the table who I've never seen before).
The rest of the hand plays itself, flop comes 227cch, SB checks, I bet around 2/3-3/4 pot, folds to SB who shoves, I snap. He has 76o, starts calling for a 6 to hit, I give him the bad news that a 6 doesn't help him, he is less than happy and gives me his chips.
So I do not advocate limping because I think you lose a very significant edge, however I really did feel that it was very very easy to get called on my iso raise. So either I shove and almost always win or play the same hand with the same number of players for less money.
